London calling! FC Bayern Women will play Arsenal WFC in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. Friday lunchtime’s draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland by Nadine Kessler, UEFA’s head of women’s football, and Ellen White of reigning European champions England. The first leg will be played in Munich on 21 or 22 March, with the return match happening the following week in London on 29/30 March.
‘Arsenal one of the top teams in England and Europe’
Head coach Alexander Straus is already looking forward to the knockout clash. “Every team in the pot was strong,” said the Norwegian. “Now we’re playing against Arsenal and very excited about it. Arsenal are one of the top teams in England and Europe, and they’ll be two very good games. Arsenal have a lot of good players. Obviously they’ve got injury problems, but they’ve strengthened well in the winter to make up for the losses of Viviane Miedema and Beth Mead. It’s also two Scandinavian coaches against each other, which will be interesting.”
Stanway: It’s going to be exciting!
Bayern’s English player Georgia Stanway is also pleased with the draw. “It’s going to be exciting!” said the European champion. “I’m really looking forward to playing against an English team in the Champions League quarter-finals and coming up against some of my friends on the pitch. Arsenal are a top team so we’ll need to be at our best. They’re in very good form at the moment, scoring a lot of goals and are hard to get past in defence. We’ll really have to be in top shape when we play against them.”
