European and soon world champions?

Georgia Stanway, England, Australia

Georgia Stanway and her teammates after England went ahead against Australia in the semi-finals.

A year after winning the Euros on home soil, Stanway and England now have the chance to lift the world title down under. Sarina Wiegman’s team claimed a 3-1 win over co-hosts Australia in the second semi-final on Wednesday. The Lionesses went ahead thanks to Ella Toone’s 36th-minute strike, but Matilda captain Sam Kerr levelled things after the restart with a hit from 25 yards. However, England retook the lead with 20 minutes to go through Lauren Hemp. Alessia Russo then settled things in the 86th minute. Midfielder Stanway and her Lionesses will now take on Spain in the final on Sunday, 20 August.

Sweden beaten by Spain

Magdalena Eriksson, Sweden, Spain, World Cup

Magdalena Eriksson and Sweden came up short in the semi-final against Spain.

In contrast, new Bayern player Eriksson and her Sweden team were beaten 2-1 in their semi-final clash with Spain. All three goals came in the final 10 minutes of the game, with Salma Paralluelo putting the Spanish ahead on 81 minutes. Rebecka Blomqvist then levelled things with two minutes to go, but barely 60 seconds later Olga Carmona fired Spain back ahead and into Sunday’s final. Eriksson will look to return to Munich with a bronze medal as Sweden face Australia in the third-place play-off on Saturday, 19 August.
