5 facts on Bayern Women’s Champions League game at Ajax

FC Bayern Women take to the UEFA Women’s Champions League stage for the final time in 2023 as they visit Ajax for Matchday 4 of the group stage on Wednesday. After a draw in the first meeting last week and at the weekend away at Nürnberg, Alexander Straus’s team want to get back to winning ways and defend top spot in Europe.

1. Positive head-to-head

Die Frauen have faced their Ajax counterparts three times before, winning 3-1 and 3-0 over two legs in the round of 32 in 2020 to advance to the last 16. There was then last week’s 1-1 draw at the FC Bayern Campus.

2. Record goalscorer Schüller

Lea Schüller enjoys scoring against Ajax, netting in both of the last two encounters. The Germany international is also Bayern’s record goalscorer in the Champions League with 12 goals from 28 appearances. The striker has so far made 111 competitive appearances for the Munich club, scoring 70 goals.

3. Ajax conceding early

Ajax are the only team in the Champions League this season to have conceded three goals in the first 15 minutes of games (two vs. Roma, one vs. Bayern). FCB have in fact gone ahead in the opening two minutes in both of their last two meetings with the Dutch champions, netting inside one minute in 2020 and inside 120 seconds last week.

4. Bayern still unbeaten

Bayern are still yet to lose a competitive fixture in 2023/24, earning 10 wins and four draws from their 14 matches so far.

5. Big crowd in Amsterdam

The Johan Cruyff Arena can hold 55,865 spectators.

Wednesday’s game will be played at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena. Built in 1996, the Netherlands’ largest stadium has a capacity of 55,865. It will be Bayern Women’s first visit to the ground. The home side announced last week that over 20,000 tickets had already been sold, meaning the two teams can look forward to a great crowd in Amsterdam.
