Bühl, Kett and Co miss out on EURO final after extra-time drama

What a bitter end to an incredible drama! Germany were beaten 1-0 by Spain after extra time on Wednesday night and therefore missed out on a place in the final of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025. Aitana Bonmatí scored the winning goal for the Spaniards seven minutes before the end of extra time (113’).

Klara Bühl and Franziska Kett were both named in the German starting line-up, while Linda Dallmann and Lea Schüller both came off the bench. Backup goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic and the injured Giulia Gwinn supported from the sidelines.

Bühl the standout German

The first big chance fell to Bühl after just eight minutes: the FCB forward was set free by a long ball from goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger but shot just wide of the right post. Spain grew in strength as the match wore on and Germany were grateful to Berger that it remained 0-0 at the break.

Goalless 90 minutes – decided in extra time

After the break, Germany were braver and came into the game. With about an hour played, Bühl had another good opportunity to break the deadlock but was denied by the feet of goalkeeper Cata Coll from close range. The eight-time European champions upped the pressure, with Bühl a constant threat in attack. She whipped a direct free kick just wide of the target, before her long-distance effort in added time was clawed off the line by the Spain keeper. So after a goalless 90 minutes, it went to extra time.

Following an uneventful first period of extra time, the world champions then struck in clinical fashion, with Bonmatí finding the net from a tight angle to score the only goal. Substitute Schüller did force another good save from Coll late on, but Germany could not prevent their defeat and eliminiation from the tournament.
