FC Bayern’s Giulia Gwinn is facing several weeks on the sidelines with injury. The Germany captain suffered medial ligament damage to her left knee while representing her country in their women's European Championship opener against Poland, a 2-0 win. Although the injury is a severe setback, Gwinn will only have to take a few weeks off and not several months, as was the case with two previous cruciate ligament ruptures.
After a dramatic saving tackle to block a shot by Ewa Pajor, the 26-year-old was unable to continue and had to be substituted in the 40th minute of Friday’s match. Gwinn will play no further part in this summer’s Women’s EURO and will also be unavailable for FC Bayern for several weeks.
