FCB Women beat Duisburg to stay top

FC Bayern Women claimed a 2-0 win at home to MSV Duisburg on Sunday evening. The hosts took an early lead after just eight minutes through Jovana Damnjanovic, but the second goal didn't arrive until the 71st minute courtesy of Georgia Stanway's penalty.

The victory means FCB Women remain unbeaten in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga and one point ahead of VfL Wolfsburg at the top of the table with 17 points.

Three changes to starting XI

Head coach Alexander Straus made three changes to the side that started in the 2-1 home win against VfL Wolfsburg last weekend. Tainara and Tuva Hansen started at the back in place of Magdalena Eriksson and Giulia Gwinn, while Jill Baijings was preferred to Lea Schüller in attack.

Lots of possession in first half

FCB saw lots of the ball in the early stages against the bottom-placed visitors and took advantage of their first opportunity. Katharina Naschenweng took out two Duisburg players with a neat one-two with Klara Bühl, making her 300th competitive appearance, before delivering a low cross from the byline into the six-yard box, where Damnjanovic was there to make it 1-0.

Bayern continued to dominate after that and could've led 2-0 before the break. Damnjanovic's shot was blocked by an MSV player, with the follow-up volley from Bühl also being blocked by Duisburg captain Vanessa Fürst. Georgia Stanway had the next big chance on 43 minutes, when her first-time shot from a corner was blocked on the line by Meret Günster, with Fürst thwarting the rebound from Baijings.

Stanway doubles lead in second half

The Munich girls began the second period well. Dallmann was lurking on the edge of the box after a clearance, but once again a Duisburg body got in the way of the volley. Sydney Lohmann embarked on a solo run through midfield before passing to Dallmann, who kept her composure and fed Stanway next to her, but an MSV defender slid in to clear as she shot. A couple of minutes later, Dallmann and Stanway were involved again as Bayern wrapped up the win, Dallmann winning the penalty that was converted by the England international.

The closing stages saw FCB keeping possession and calming the game down, but there were chances for a third goal. Substitute Maximiliane Rall's low shot was pushed away by the MSV keeper for a corner, while Bühl's free kick in added time was thwarted by Mahmutovic.

Roma and Bremen coming up

This Wednesday, 15 November, FCB Women begin their UEFA Women's Champions League campaign, hosting AS Roma in their opening Group C fixture. Kick-off against the defending Italian champions is at 18:45 CET (tickets). Four days later, Straus' side are back in Bundesliga action with a trip to SV Werder Bremen on Sunday 19 November. The Matchday 8 clash kicks off at 18:30 CET.
