FCB Women advance to quarter-finals

FC Bayern Women beat SC Freiburg 2-1 on Sunday evening to advance to the DFB Cup quarter-finals. Munich took the lead when Meret Felde put through her own goal (27'), with Lea Schüller doubling the advantage in the second half (55'). Freiburg's Cora Zicai made it exciting again (61'), but Bayern sealed a narrow victory.

Two changes

Head coach Alexander Straus made two changes to the XI that drew 1-1 with Vålerenga Oslo on Thursday. Linda Sembrant and Weronika Zawistowska started on the bench, Carolin Simon and Lea Schüller replacing them. Giulia Gwinn celebrated a milestone, making her 100th competitive appearance for FC Bayern.

Bayern ahead after own goal

The home side had the first chance, Selina Vobia setting up Lisa Karl, who skied her shot (3'). Munich almost took the lead when Klara Bühl fired just wide (9'). One minute later Schüller had only Rafaela Borggräfe to beat but saw her effort saved. The keeper made another strong save against Pernille Harder (20') but was unable to prevent Felde from putting through her own goal under pressure from Harder after a Stanway cross (27'). Munich were completely in control now and Harder almost doubled the lead when she only just missed Bühl's pass (42').

Schüller makes it two

Bayern rewarded themselves for their pressure after half-time, Sarah Zadrazil setting up Stanway, who invited Schüller to find the net (55'), but the game was not over. Zicai soon found the top corner of the net from 20 yards to pull one back for Freiburg (61').

The home side wanted more and had their chances, Shekira Martinez aiming too high (68') and Zicai firing wide from distance (76'). Munich were in control again in the closing stages and sealed a 2-1 victory to progress to the next round.
