3-1 at Parc de Princes: FC Bayern Women continue winning run away to PSG

  • Ninth win in a row
  • Two goals in two minutes
  • Dallmann, Tanikawa and Damnjanović on target

FC Bayern Women once again came from behind to claim another victory in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday night, winning 3-1 at Paris Saint-Germain. Sakina Karchaoui’s opener for PSG (16th minute) was immediately cancelled out by Linda Dallmann (17’). Momoko Tanikawa (34’) then set coach José Barcala’s side on their way to a ninth consecutive win in all competitions, which substitute Jovana Damnjanović (89’) wrapped up shortly before full time.

Thanks to the victory in Paris, Bayern now have a healthy nine points on the board and are well on their way to the knockout stages. They’re five points clear of 13th place, which would mean elimination, with just six left to play for.

Barcala: ‘Very pleased’

“I’m very pleased for the team,” said Barcala after the final whistle. “We witnessed two completely different halves. In the first half we were very dominant and had a lot of possession. Despite going behind, we had the game under control at all times – it was a very good performance. We didn’t manage to be as dominant as we wanted in the second half.”

Eriksson: ‘Very happy with the win’

“I’m very happy with the win,” stated Magdalena Eriksson. “The first half was good from us. In the second half they made it hard for us and it was solely about getting the result. The players who came off the bench also played a big part in ensuring that we got the win.”

Deficit overturned in first half

The visitors got off to a better start and were the dominant team, but it was the Parisians who struck first. With 16 minutes gone, Karchaoui cut inside from the left and found the bottom corner with the hosts’ first real attacking action. But Bayern responded immediately and equalised just a minute later. A cross from the right from Giulia Gwinn eventually landed at the feet of Dallmann, who netted from close range. The German champions remained in control after that but just lacked the final precision, like with Georgia Stanway’s long-range drive that whistled over the bar. Tanikawa was more accurate in the 34th minute, when she fired in after strong individual play to give FCB a deserved lead at the break.

Hard-fought second half

It was a similar story to begin with in the second half, with the Bavarians pushing to put the contest to bed but PSG repeatedly getting a leg in the way. As the game went on, however, the hosts also had chances, like in the 69th minute when Ena Mahmutovic saved Vitória Yaya’s effort and then also got the better of Elisa De Almeida from the resulting corner. At the other end, Pernille Harder curled a shot against the bar. So it remained finely poised until substitute Damnjanović bundled the ball in to make it 3-1.
