Third Google Pixel Supercup triumph in a row! FCB Women beat Wolfsburg

All good things come in threes! FC Bayern Women won the Google Pixel Supercup to claim the first silverware of the new season and get off to a successful start. José Barcala’s team beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 in front of FC Bayern president Herbert Hainer and won the Supercup for the third time in a row at Ingolstadt’s Audi-Sportpark. They are now sole record Supercup winners with three titles.

Jovana Damnjanović (32’) and Klara Bühl (45’+4) handed Bayern a two-goal lead at half-time, with Bühl rounding off her brace after the restart (46’) to seal the final scoreline.

Hainer: ‘The hunger hasn’t diminished’

FC Bayern president Herbert Hainer: “Congratulations on the third Supercup triumph in a row – this title has become a nice tradition for our FC Bayern Women. They’ve laid down a marker at the start of the season with their historic hat-trick: the hunger hasn’t diminished. The successful inauguration of the Sportpark and now the first success of the new season – FC Bayern Women pick up where they left off last season, laying down markers again and again.”

Barcala: ‘I’m very happy we’ve won the title’

José Barcala: “I’m very happy we’ve won the title. But what makes me even happier is our performance and the individual performances our players turned in. I must congratulate my players on a strong display and the title, even though we struggled a bit at the start.”

Bühl: ‘Grateful and glad I could help the team’

Klara Bühl: “I have no problems performing well, even in big matches. I don’t know why, but I’m extremely grateful for it, and I’m glad I could help the team again today. It’s going to be a very exciting season for us. You could see today what quality we have in the squad, but we’ll get even stronger when some of our injured players return in the coming weeks. We just have to believe in us, and if so, a lot is possible.”

Damnjanović and Bühl hand FCB the lead

It was a balanced and somewhat scrappy affair at the start, Wolfsburg’s Cora Zicai aiming too high from distance in the second minute. The Wolves were more active, Zicai drawing a save from Ena Mahmutovic after seven minutes.

Munich soon got a grip and enjoyed more of the ball. Wolfsburg’s bold counter-pressing caused problems for Bayern, but they refused be knocked out of their stride and rewarded themselves when Bühl’s free kick was flicked on by Damnjanović and the ball found the net via keeper Stina Johannes. Bühl made it two with the half-time whistle imminent, curling the ball into the back of the net.

Bühl seals it

The industrious Bühl all but put the game to bed immediately after the restart. Alara’s pass teed up the winger, who charged down the right and beat Johannes. Bayern applied cruise control now but were still in control. Mahmutovic failed to get hold of the ball in the 56^th minute, but Peddemors’ shot was blocked.

VfL kept probing and a sublime pass reached Svenja Huth, but the Wolfsburg captain took a little too long and the angle was too tight. Wolfburg upped the ante, Piljic miscuing before Mahmutovic saved from Huth as Munich sealed a deserved Supercup triumph.

Bundesliga opener at Berlin

After the Supercup, Bayern turn their focus to the Bundesliga. They contest the opener of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga on Friday 21 August at 18:20 CEST when they take on Union Berlin at Alte Försterei. Ten days later, the double winners entertain FSV Mainz on 31 August at 18:00 in their first home match.
