Lead extended: FCB Women prevail in top-of-the-table clash

  • Victory in crunch clash
  • Bühl on target
  • Lead up to five points

Thanks to a hard-earned victory in the biggest clash on Matchday 6, FC Bayern Women have extended their lead at the top of the table! Coach José Barcala’s team celebrated a 1–0 away win against second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga on Saturday. Klara Bühl (18th minute) scored the winner for Die Frauen at Stadion am Bretanobad.

Thanks to the three points picked up in Frankfurt, the defending champions are comfortably top of the standings ahead of the first international break, having now taken the maximum 18 points from their first six matches and establishing a five-point lead over Eintracht.

Single-goal lead at the break

After an evenly-matched opening phase, the home side produced the first notable moment of the match. In the 17th minute, Larissa Mühlhaus took a chance and struck the ball first-time from the edge of the penalty area, but Ena Mahmutovic was alert and tipped the ball round the post. Immediately after the resulting corner, the Munich side were celebrating. Edna won the ball at the near post and played it to Sophie Proost, who powered her way through in midfield and sent Bühl clear on goal. The Germany international coolly slotted the ball into the far corner to make it 1-0. After that last season’s double winners enjoyed the upper hand, but chances were few and far between. With the first half already in stoppage time, Frankfurt had a golden opportunity to equalise. Mahmutovic (45+1) just managed to get to the ball ahead of Laura Freigang, who was ready to shoot, following a cross from Rebecka Blomqvist, and kept the score at 1–0.

Hard-fought second half

After the break, the visitors were clearly dominant, but a well-organised Eintracht side made life difficult for the Munich team and kept threatening, as in the 60th minute when Freigang tested goalkeeper Mahmutovic with a header. At the other end, substitute Linda Dallmann (66’) tried her luck from the edge of the box, but her deflected shot ended up in the side netting. So, despite their dominance and a spell of pressure in the closing minutes, Bayern Women held on for a narrow but deserved victory.
