Matchday 5 in the Google Pixel Bundesliga takes FC Bayern Women to RB Leipzig on Sunday, 22 October. Kick-off is at 18:30 CEST. Here’s all you need to know about the game in our preview.
State of play
After last week’s 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena, Bayern sit third in the Bundesliga with eight points from two 2-0 wins over Köln and Essen and two draws at Freiburg and against Frankfurt. The defending champions now want three more points in their final game before the international break as they visit the top-flight newcomers looking to keep pace at the summit.
The opponent
Promoted Leipzig have a win and three defeats to their name on their Bundesliga debut. Losses to Köln (2-1), Frankfurt (3-1) and Wolfsburg (2-0) have been accompanied by a 3-2 victory over Essen. Three points from four games places Uzun Saban’s team in 10th.
Personnel
Sam Kerr remains out after a knock to her knee and will only return after the international break. Head coach Alexander Straus is also still without Sydney Lohmann (ankle), Pernille Harder (ankle), Carolin Simon (cruciate ligament), Weronika Zawistowska (cruciate ligament) and Cécilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir (knee).
Straus: “Leipzig are a tough opponent”
Alexander Straus: “Leipzig are a tough opponent. We’ve prepared intensively for the game this week. They play with a lot of enthusiasm, but we obviously want to play our game. If we play like we’ve trained this week, then we’ve got a good chance at three points.”
Klara Bühl: “Calling them a promoted side belittles them a bit. Leipzig are very strong in my opinion. Everything I’ve seen from them so far confirms they have a lot of quality in their ranks. They play very direct and look to get forward. We want to play our game and challenge the Leipzig defence.”
