FC Bayern Women host Wolfsburg in crunch Bundesliga fixture

FC Bayern Women host Wolfsburg for Matchday 6 in the Google Pixel Bundesliga on Sunday (15:00 CET). As part of a test examining expanded capacity at the FC Bayern Campus, a total of 4,347 tickets have been sold. Fans are advised to arrive early and not to come if they do not have a ticket.

State of play

Bayern are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga for 2023/24, sitting third in the table on 11 points. The champions registered a commanding 3-0 win away at RB Leipzig prior to the international break. A number of players have been in action for their countries over the past week but now return to club action with a huge clash against last season’s runners-up.

Jovana Damnjanovic and Bayern are fully focused on Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Opponent: Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg have made an almost perfect start to this campaign, winning their opening four league fixtures before Tommy Stroot’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by Hoffenheim prior to the break. However, last season’s Champions League finalists were also knocked out of Europe in the qualifying rounds. Nevertheless, the She-Wolves are top of the domestic standings. Victory for Bayern would see them leapfrog the current DFB Cup holders, though.

Personnel

Head coach Alexander Straus remains without long-term absentees Pernille Harder (knee), Carolin Simon, Weronika Zawistowska (both cruciate ligament) and Cécilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir (dislocated kneecap). Lina Magull is also still out after her muscular injury sustained against Leipzig. However, Sydney Lohmann and Sam Kerr have returned to training.

We spoke with ex-Wolfsburg forward Harder ahead of the game:

Straus: “Tight, exciting and interesting”

Alexander Straus: “In our last home league meeting, when we beat Wolfsburg 1-0, we were the better team and deserved winners. We respect Wolfsburg and they us. We know that we can’t allow ourselves many mistakes because they’ll be punished. It’ll be tight, exciting and interesting.”

Linda Dallmann: “It’s always the small things that decide games against Wolfsburg – who has the better day, who plays with more confidence. It’s important that we take the ease we had in other games into the top fixtures as well. We’ve already got the first advantage with a home game in front of a bigger crowd.”
