On the last day of the summer transfer window, FC Bayern Munich confirmed that US national team player Julian Green will join fellow Bundesliga club Hamburger SV on loan until the end of the season. The 19-year-old forward will return to Bayern at the end of the 2014/15 season where he has a contract until June, 2017. Speaking to, Green talked about the suddenness of the move, his decision-making process and developing further as a player.

Green's loan move came sudden to be sure, and he had to make the decision quickly and thoughtfully with the closing of the transfer window. "I received the offer last week and had to make the decision over the weekend. It is about my future and my career so it was not easy," Green said. It was not easy, but for Julian it was a move he simply had to make to continue developing as a player, "I feel like it was the right decision. My aim is to get better and better. Therefore I need playing time on a higher level."

At Hamburg he will face a different kind of pressure. HSV are the only club never to have been relegated from the Bundesliga since its formation in 1963 but came dangerously close last year. Now they face a rebuilding period with the pressure of improving on their worst-ever league season. It's a challenge Green is very much relishing, though: "HSV is a top club and I am very happy about their interest and trust. I hope to get as much time on the pitch as possible and will give my best in every training session. I want to show my potential and help support the team as best as I can."

Advice from Guardiola and Klinsmann

Green will undoubtedly get more chances to play and prove himself with Hamburg, a factor that was crucial in the decision making. "I talked with the club, the coach and the team. Everybody agreed that playing time is the most important thing, and that's why they all supported my decision," Green said. There is one more person that will benefit from Green's loan, US national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann. "Sure. Jürgen Klinsmann is happy about this move as well because he wants every member of the national team to gain experience and get a chance to develop. Playing for HSV hopefully means more playing time. And that's the place where you really get better."

For the time being, Green's focus lies elsewhere. In Prague to be exact, for the US national team's friendly against the Czech Republic tomorrow. But Green can't help but be excited about a new environment and a new challenge "At the moment I'm with the national team and want to concentrate on the match tomorrow. At the end of the week I will start planning my move to Hamburg. I'm looking forward to getting to know the team and checking out the new city. I am both excited and curious!"

Julian, we are too! Best of luck this season, and see you again soon!
