It was a familiar encounter as Vivianne Miedema’s Oranje women faced Japan and Mana Iwabuchi on Tuesday. The Dutch women were no match for the reigning World Cup champions and fell 2-1, ending their first World Cup run. Japan next face Australia in the quarterfinals on June 27.
After winning their group, Germany’s next mission was to win the first game of the knockout stage against fifth-ranked Sweden. Melanie Leupolz and Leonie Maier started for Germany and were later joined by Lena Lotzen, while FCB teammates Melanie Behringer, and Sara Däbritz were on the bench as Germany dominated the Swedes in their 4-1 win. Nora Holstad's Norway took on England in what proved to be an exciting matchup, though it was the Three Lionesses who came out on top in their 2-1 victory, forcing the Norwegians to exit the tournament. Germany next play France in the quarterfinals on June 26.
Caroline Abbé and Vanessa Bürki's Switzerland faced hosts Canada though ultimately came up short against the hosts, falling 1-0 and getting eliminated from the tournament.
