A strong touch, one touch to lay it off and sunk into the bottom left corner with powerful right-footed finish! Jamal Musiala's pinpoint shot in the 24th minute provided the all-important second goal on the way to FC Bayern's commanding 4-1 win over Lazio in the Champions League round of 16 first leg - and secured himself an entry into the FCB history books.
Musiala replaces Kuffour
With his goal to make it 2-0, the nimble attacking player became FC Bayern's youngest scorer in the Champions League. Two days before his 18th birthday, Musiala replaced Bayern legend Samuel Kuffour (18 years, 60 days) in this category. He is also only the second player under the age of 18 to score in a Champions League knockout match. Previously, only Bojan Krkic of FC Barcelona had achieved this.
Praise from head coach Flick
"We're all happy that Jamal played well and scored the goal. He did a good job," Hansi Flick said, praising the youngster after the final whistle. "Jamal is very secure on the ball, can also play well between the lines. He has a good sense of which spaces to be in," said the Bayern coach, describing Musiala's qualities. "We wanted to create overloads and one-on-ones in the zones between the lines and in the half-spaces, and he did that well."
Great excitement for starting XI
Musiala was not only convincing as a scorer. The 17-year-old was very present, often available to play and won the most balls (six) for Bayern after Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies (both seven). Teammate Leon Goretzka revealed that Musiala had gone into the game with great excitement ahead of making his first start in the Champions League Last 16. "He was really happy to be allowed to play from the start. We told him that he should be brave, what makes him strong. Jo [Kimmich] and I have tried to keep the pressure off," Goretzka explained. "The fact that he is now the record goal scorer is a nice thing on the side."
Robert Lewandowski scored once more in the Champions League and is now the all-time third top goal scorer in the competition:
