The Bayern Basketball team lost its first test game 86-85. The loss in Sardinia against the former Italian champions Dinamo Sassari means the newly formed team of head coach Andrea Trinchieri will now only play in the small final of the "City of Cagliari Tournament" on Saturday. Starting at 18:30 the next opponent will be the second first division team Napoli, who lost 75-70 against Munich EuroLeague competitor Baskonia Vítoria-Gasteiz with Wade Baldwin.
The game can again be seen in the livestream, which will be available on the homepage of the FCBB homepage from around 18:15 onwards.
Against Sassari, the German Cup winner squandered a supposedly safe 78-66 lead after a strong third quarter (21-11). However, Trinchieri largely dispensed with key players such as the slightly injured Corey Walden and Darrun Hilliard in the end. FCBB's best scorers in front of 800 spectators were Andreas Obst (14 points in the first half) and Deshaun Thomas (13).
63-51 lead after strong third quarter
Lucic, Thomas, Schilling, Hilliard and Walden formed the first five for the FCBB. The hosts took advantage of Munich's coordination problems in defense early on and scored both from distance and directly at the basket. Thomas scored the first five points for the Germans but after falling behind 17-11 (7th) Trinchieri wanted to reorganize the defense with the timeout. Things went better and Walden's buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter got them within one.
The new U.S. guard also provided the first lead at 25-23 (11th). But Sassari got baskets too easily in the second and was just ahead at the break thanks to a 62 percent quota and 15-11 on the boards.
In the third quarter, FCBB defended on a different level and did not allow a basket for eight minutes. The 63-51 score (28th) meant the highest Munich lead up to that point. In the end, however, the guests had too many mistakes in the final minutes, and the home team fought its way back ahead 81-78. With 19 seconds to go, Sassari went in front 84-83, and with six seconds left Jaramaz managed to counter in a one-on-one to make it 85:84 for Bayern. But after a final foul, Burnell converted two of three free throws to win it for Dinamo.
Bayern was without Djedovic, Rubit and Weiler-Babb, who had been rested, and Radosevic and Zipser, who did not travel with the team.
