National player Maodo Lo will play for the Bavarian basketball team as the 25-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the German champions until 2020. He was born in Berlin but most recently played for Bundesliga competitor Bamberg. In the EuroLeague, to which the Bavarians will return in October, the strong point guard can refer to the experience of 56 games played (6.2 ppg 41.6% shooting). Maodo Lo has played 81 games with an average of 8.7 points as well as 2.1 assists in the BBL.
Maodo Lo successfully completed the initial medical examinations in Munich on Friday and afterwards said: "I am very happy to be able to play in Munich now. Bavaria is currently on the upswing and I hope to to be part of this positive process. Proving myself here again in the EuroLeague and being able to contribute my experience is very appealing for me. Because I want to develop myself together with the club on this highest level and of course also celebrate successes, for that I will give 100 percent. I'm looking forward to this new chapter in my career."
FCBB Sports Director Daniele Baiesi, who returned from his visit to the NBA Summer League on Friday, said: "Maodo will be at the heart of our team. He is a modern, very talented two-way player who, in my opinion, has only partially shown his great potential so far." He continued: "We are delighted that he has chosen us as his companions for his next step. He will give us playmaking and scoring as well as a not inconsiderable experience in the EuroLeague, which is extremely important for our team as a newcomer in the new competition format. Maodo is a professional with a great work attitude who will also enrich our club with his positive energy and exuberant personality".
Already in 2011 - 18 years old - he went to the USA and prepared for college with the Wilbraham Titans. This was followed by four years at Columbia University in Manhattan, where he won the "College Insider Tournament with the Lions in 2016 - Lo was elected MVP of the post-season tournament and no player has ever hit more threes for the team than he (277). In his last year at the NCAA, the former U20 international averaged 17 points per game. After being ignored in the NBA draft, the professional career of the Point Guard began in Bamberg where he won the double in 2017.
Maodo Lo was nominated for the national team as early as 2014 - by Emir "Muki" Mutapcic, then national coach (and assistant coach of Bayern) who he will now meet again in Munich. Lo played alongside Dirk Nowitzki at the European Championships in 2015, and the dynamic and elegant playmaker achieved the best German result in ten years with his DBB selection and entry into the quarter-finals at the European Championships in 2017. Maodo Lo (whose mother, Elvira Bach, is a well-known painter) has played 48 times for Germany so far. With the A2 national team he won the silver medal at the Universiade in South Korea.
