
The sporting highlight of the "BayWa Basketball Tour 2019" begins: On Wednesday evening, the Bavarian basketball team will open the top-class "NBA G League International Challenge" (18 - 22 September) with their duel against Brazilian champion, C.B. Flamengo from Rio. The game starts at 23:30 CEST (live stream on the Facebook page of MagentaSport) The game will be played in the 10,000 + capacity Antel Arena in Montevideo.
The German champion will be the first European team to take part in this invitational tournament, which also features the current champion of the intercontinental Liga de las Américas, the Argentinian series champion and capital city club, C.A. San Lorenzo de Almagro - second Bayern opponent on Thursday. There is a team with an elite selection from the NBA G-League development league, Uruguay's national team and Mexican runners-up Capitanes. The first G League Challenge was won by the US side at the 2018 NBA All-Star weekend in Los Angeles.
In order to reach the semi-finals and finals this weekend, the Bavarians will need to finish at least second in their group of three. The Munich team was able to train with their tournament squad for the first time on Monday, including the German national players Danilo Barthel, Maodo Lo and Paul Zipser. Center Leon Radosevic (foot) was also back in action. Only Mathias Lessort, who won bronze at the World Championships with France, and Vladimir Lucic (Serbia) are still missing. They will train individually after a short break until the team returns on September 24.
C.B. Flamengo, FCBB's first opponent, has won the Brazilian title six times so far and as well as the Intercontinental Cup in 2014. They also have a World Cup participant in their ranks: The experienced winger Marquinos Sousa scored an average of 10.2 points at the World Cup in China for Brazil who impressed and ended in 13th place. A former Argentinian international, Franco Balbi and also Zach Graham and Leron Black, two US pros, are on the team from Rio de Janeiro.
