The Bayern basketball team finished the EuroLeague tournament in Valencia without a win. In the second game against the Greek top club Olympiakos Piraeus, about 17 good minutes and a 30-18 lead were not enough to succeed - after an unbalanced performance, the score was 82-68.
The next (non-public) test game for the FCBB will take place on Saturday in Ulm.
The FCBB - Zipser and Radosevic were rested - started well though less than 24 hours after the intense duel with host Valencia (84-76 loss). Five points in a row by Thomas, a spectacular dunk by Baldwin and Djedovic's three ensured a 17-6 lead (10th). In the second quarter turnovers accumulated and Trinchieri had to take the next time-out (19-15/13.) - the answer was two threes from Bray and Djedovic for a 25-15 lead (15.). Again Bray took the biggest lead from distance (30-18/16. but Olympiakos reacted with tougher defense until halftime.
The Munich team then lost intensity and focus; the Greeks, however, found their offensive rhythm and took a clear lead after the restart (58-46/30.). Piraeus routinely took advantage of the lack of physical fitness and was already the winner at 71-57 (35.).
FCBB against Piraeus: Weiler-Babb 3, Baldwin 7, Bray 8, Reynolds 7/8 Rebounds, Thomas 10, Lucic 11, Djedovic 8, Amaize 3, Johnson 7, Sisko 4/7 Assists, Grant.
Quotes:
Andrea Trinchieri: "Compared to the first game yesterday this was a step backwards. We had 17, 18 good minutes. But two or three mistakes before the break made us depressed and we couldn't find our way back to what we had to do. But it's very simple: every player has to stick to what he's supposed to do. But now we have three more preparation games to adjust our offense and defense. Olympiakos played without Spanoulis today and we played without Zipser and Radosevic. I think and hope that in a month's time it will be different in the next game against them".
Nihad Djedovic: "It was the second defeat and in the end we have seen where the mistakes are. There are still many things to improve. Fortunately, we still have two weeks until the first game of the season against Milan. We have a good group with guys who want to work hard on the mistakes. And we will do that."
