The FC Bayern basketball team has reached the top four for the German cup 2020. They got in the final tournament in Munich's Audi Dome thanks to an unexpected 123-114 victory of Syntainics MBC on Wednesday evening against Bayreuth in Group D. Due to this home victory, the MBC pulled the Franconians into a three-way tie with the FCBB: Since all none of the three teams has a better record than 2-1, the 97-60 victory of the Bavarians over the MBC will send them to the Top Four after having the most points scored.
BG Göttingen and ratiopharm Ulm had already qualified for the final tournament for the "MagentaSport BBL Cup", which is held in the Munich Audi Dome. The fourth participant will come from Group A, with defending champions Berlin, Bonn and Braunschweig still in the race for the coveted Top Four ticket. In view of the current pandemic situation, the date of the tournament is still not decided.
Bayern was dependent on the help of the MBC after they lost the opening game against Bayreuth 89-95 immediately following the double game week in the EuroLeague with road games in Tel Aviv and Istanbul. The following weekend, they won against Crailsheim (80-63) and MBC, so the theoretical chances were still intact.
Due to the big loss against Bayern, the MBC had only minimal chances of making it into the Top Four, but a win with a difference of more than 60 points against Bayreuth would have been necessary. Nevertheless, the BBL team from Saxony-Anhalt showed itself highly motivated, winning the first quarter 39-21 and hitting a total of 23 threes. The medi Bayreuth team had been in quarantine in the two weeks before after positive cases, so the game had to be played at this later date. Their final game will be this Thursday against Hakro Merlins Crailsheim (0-2 wins).
