For the ninth time in a row, the Bayern basketball team has reached the playoff semifinals for the German championship - but once again, this should not be the end of the line for head coach Andrea Trinchieri's team. After the two hard-fought away victories in Bonn (80:68, 82:81), the Munich team has a very good chance of advancing to the final series (starting June 10) for the title. In ten BBL seasons (including 2020 Corona-conditioned a Final10 without regular playoffs) they have already been in the finals five times.
The first chance for the FCBB to get the necessary third win for a sixth final appearance comes this Saturday evening in the Audi Dome, when the Bavarians have home rights for the first time against the Telekom Baskets. The game tips off at 18:00; a possible fourth game would take place on Whit Monday, also starting at 18:00 in the Audi Dome.
That the task on Saturday is not easy against Bonn, which will fight with all its might against the end of the season after earning the second seed. Here are some quotes from the FCBB:
Andrea Trinchieri: „Es ist eine knifflige Situation, dass es nach zwei schweren Auswärtsspielen 2:0 steht; normalerweise heißt es dann meistens 1:1. Unser Ziel ist, die Serie zu beenden, aber dafür braucht man viel Killerinstinkt. Mein Job ist kompliziert, denn es ist normal, dass die Spieler denken, dass sie ja noch eine zweite Chance am Montag auf den dritten Sieg hätten. Ob wir was am Kader ändern werden, wissen wir noch nicht. Wir werden im Training schauen, wie die Spieler auf physischen Kontakt reagieren. Nur um des Wechselns willen werde ich nicht wechseln. Wenn die (verletzten) Spieler gesund sind, dann ja. (…) Die Frage ist, ob ich einen Spieler nach dreieinhalb Monaten Pause überhaupt in den Playoffs bringen kann; aber er (Corey Walden) ist noch nicht freigegeben, deswegen ist das jetzt bei ihm noch kein Thema. „A Dangerous Game“
Othello Hunter: "We are ready to win one more time. But I think it will be really hard to end the series on Saturday. Bonn won't give up, it's a do-or-die game for them now. But if we are focused, we will have a chance to win again. But if we come with half effort and are not ready, then it will be very difficult."
Nick Weiler-Babb: "We've done a good job so far of stopping Parker Jackson-Cartwright. He hasn't been getting open shots and we have to keep that up. It's going to come down to the defense again more than anything. We can't let them think they have another chance here. We have to get the 50-50 balls and show extra effort. We would have another chance on Monday, but we want to finish it on Saturday. We can't give them a chance to build confidence. We have to make it as easy as possible for us in this series and not complicate things (with a loss)."
Marko Pesic: "We need the best performance to be able to finish the series. But it is the most dangerous game in my opinion. To end a series is the most difficult thing, no matter what the series is. Bonn has played an outstanding season and they will try everything again like in game two. But I think we have enough intelligent players who understand that."
