Joshua Obiesie signs with FCBB until 2023

Bayern Basketball have added talented German guard Joshua Obiesie to their backcourt, with the 21-year-old Munich native signing a contract with the Cup winners until 2023. The left-hander had made a total of 60 BBL appearances for league rivals Wuerzburg over the past two and a half seasons. Obiesie won the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Tournament with the German U18s in 2018, the bronze medal at the 2019 European Championships with the U20s and he was a member of the German senior national team squad three times last year.

"Joshua is a talented guard who has lost some time on his way lately. However, he is now coming to Munich to prove himself anew in his hometown, to improve and help the team," Bayern sport director Daniele Baiesi said. "He is still young and has accepted the new challenge with great enthusiasm. We are happy that we can now work with him on a daily basis."

Left-handed, 21 years young, international experience.

Joshua Obiesie said, "I can't really realize it yet to be back in Munich now and to have made it to Bayern. I will try to give my best every day, with confidence and my way of creating above all. I know that I still have a lot to learn under Coach Trinchieri, because it's a different level now with a EuroLeague team. But I've had a long enough break now and I can't wait to get going."

Joshua Obiesie came through the youth teams of Munich club MTSV Schwabing and the academy teams affiliated there from the junior national leagues. In the 2018/2019 season, he was named the best player in the U19 Bundesliga NBBL. In November 2018, he moved to Würzburg.

With Unterfranken, Obiesie made 32 BBL appearances last season (5.1 ppg, 40.7% threes). The athletic guard also made nine international appearances in the Europe Cup (8.6 ppg; 41% threes). He made his debut for the German national team in February 2020.

Before Obiesie, whose family lives in Munich, starts team training with Bayern in mid-August, he will present himself in the States at the beginning of the month at the two-day event of the California Classic Summer League in the jersey of the NBA franchise Sacramento Kings (Aug. 3-4). Alongside center addition Gavin Schilling, who was also born in the state capital, Obiesie is now the second Munich native in the 2021/2022 FCBB squad.
