One week after the start of training, the Bayern basketball team celebrated a first sense of achievement: At the end of the training camp in Bruneck, head coach Andrea Trinchieri's team defeated the Italian EuroCup team Trento by a final score of 66-62 in the second test game after an excellent second half. At the beginning of the third quarter, the Munich team trailed 44-27 and 51-33. "This was a solid training camp, although we are still missing many players," Trinchieri said afterwards. "Bruneck was again a perfect place with a great hotel."
Top scorer Winston
Trinchieri left the slightly injured big men Gillespie and Harris out against Trento; in addition to the four European Championship players Obst, Weiler-Babb, Jaramaz and Lucic, he was also missing the long-injured Bonga. Trento (with former Bayern guard Flaccadori as well as Lockett and Atkins, who transferred from Chemnitz) turned Munich's early 5-0 into a 10-5 lead and benefited from the opponent's lack of rhythm in the offense.
After the break, however, the FCBB defense collectively turned up the heat and dropped consecutive threes by George, Winston as well as Walden until Rubit, in the midst of a 24-0 run, reclaiming the lead at 53-51 (31st). Sisko put the lid on with his three-pointer for a 64-59 lead and Winston with a lay-up put up the final points. Top scorer was playmaker Cassius Winston with 19 points, Jason George brought in seven rebounds while Paul Zipser and Niklas Wimberg scored five-points each.
In the Messner Museum at 7,000 feet
Mayor Roland Griessmair and Martin Huber, President of "Bruneck Kronplatz Tourism", officially welcomed the Munich delegation in their team quarters. Griessmair expressed his hope "that this friendship will continue in the future through future visits". The team visited by a gondola ride to the plateau of the imposing Kronplatz at over 7,000 feet and there at the top was the Mountain Museum of Reinhold Messner.
Bayern's season opener is on October 1 with the BBL home game in the Audi Dome against Ulm.
