Away games continue to be dramas - and Bayern knows drama! On Thursday, the Bayern basketball team won the thrilling duel against table neighbor Lyon-Villeurbanne, securing their fourth victory and crashing the French team's premiere night in their new arena. In front of 11,354 fans in the not sold-out venue, the final score after two overtimes was 101:100 (88:88, 74:74, 37:40) for Pablo Laso's team, with Niels Giffey being the Munich matchwinner.
In the first overtime, the guest led 83:77 but made two turnovers in the seemingly last minute. In the second overtime, nerves held, but the victory was overshadowed by injuries to Obst and top scorer Bolmaro (16). On Saturday, Bayern travels to face the tough BBL match against the strong newcomer Vechta (6:2 victories) on Sunday.

17% three-pointers before the break.
At Bayern, Obst made his comeback, entering the game at 17:14 (8th minute). When his first three-pointer went in, the score was 25:18. However, Asvel responded with an 11:0 run, taking the lead 29:25. During this phase, the Bayern offense often opted for more complex solutions, resulting in only three successful three-pointers out of 17 attempts by halftime. Despite the close score, it was manageable.
Ten points recovered
Two turnovers in the first 90 seconds of the second half did not increase security, and the score was 41:49, the largest deficit until then. The next stage was 48:58 (28th minute), revealing problems with only a total of 29 points scored in the second and third quarters.
Giffey commits THE offensive foul
However, the fighting FCBB, as always, tried everything, with Giffey, Booker, and then Bolmaro securing the 70:69 lead. Then Obst injured his right foot again and had to leave the game, but Weiler-Babb and again Booker secured the 73:69 lead from outside (38th minute) – yet it still wasn't (quite) enough.
From the first overtime, world champion Giffey took charge. Babbs' three-pointer allowed for the next overtime, and in this one, Giffey converted a free throw two seconds before the buzzer to make it 101:100 – it was enough, finally.
Reactions:
Pablo Laso, Head Coach of Munich: "Congratulations to my players; they fought brilliantly until the end. You need this spirit, and we have it. We had won the game a few times and lost it a few times as well. But we were able to play until the last second. I am very proud of how we fought; we did many good things to stay in the game. Although we made many mistakes, unforced errors, that kept them alive. I am happy about the victory because I know how tough it is here. I think this arena and the atmosphere will shape the next few years here, congratulations for that. (…)
When you look at the numbers, rebounds were very important. They are very physical, big, and athletic, winning this duel was our goal. We had too many turnovers, but we could compensate for that with the rebounds."
Niels Giffey: "It was good for us that we could win this tough away game; it will give us confidence, of course. I actually wanted to hit the first free throw and miss the second. It turned out differently, but we gladly accept it. We have had many close games in recent weeks that we couldn't win. The feeling of being able to win close games is important. This is a good step for us, also in the standings."
Devin Booker: "To be honest, we could have avoided being in this position. We had a few crazy turnovers that shouldn't have happened. But we kept fighting and never gave up - and it turned out well for us in the end. We really needed this win, especially on the road. Hopefully, this gives us good momentum for the next games."
