Madness in the Garden, Bayern celebrates

It's starting to get scary: FC Bayern Basketball continues to fly through its new SAP Garden, and even the great FC Barcelona was unable to stop Gordon Herbert's team in its 100:78 (48:38) victory. In the sixth home game, the arena was sold out for the sixth time and the 11,200 celebrated the eighth win of the season, especially Andi Obst, who pulled off a crazy three-point show and scored 34 points.

With his eleven threes, the world champion even set a new record in the top flight. EuroLeague top scorer Carsen Edwards assisted with another 25 points and the passionate team dominated the favorites overall with remarkable shooting percentages (62.5% FG, 20 threes) and strong defense at the back (ten steals).

World champion's record three

Bayern now have a week until their next game, again in the EuroLeague, next Friday at Red Star Belgrade.

A high-speed start saw Bayern 30:21 ahead (11'), making six of the first eleven threes. Newcomer Bitim checked in as early as the first quarter, after which Barça continued to be predominantly drawn to the board. When the visitors closed the gap to three, Obst added two buckets from outside to make it 41:32 (16'). Bayern punished a harsh foul on Edwards with its highest lead to date, 44:32!

Barcelona loses all quarters

The third quarter was Obst vs. Barça, the world champion threw in six wild threes - 74:54 (28')!!!! The only question now was whether the 28-year-old would break the all-time record. He and Yebo even managed the hundred - the arena sang “Super Bayern”!

Quotes:

Gordon Herbert, Headcoach FC Bayern Basketball: „A great performance from our players, they played together and enjoyed the moment. And obviously we had some extremely good individual performances, but they came out of the team structure. OI'm very proud of my players to go into the little break with a win like this. (...) Andi Obst put on a shooting clinic today, in both halves; I've often said I'm surprised when he misses. He struggled a bit at the start of the season, after the national team. It's good to see him back playing and enjoying basketball now. Shabazz (Napier) told everyone on the bench and Andi how the situation was (with the record). He needed one more shot to set the record, so he stayed in. (...)

We won a few games at the start of the season, but I couldn't say that we were getting better. We've been getting better for three or four weeks now. Not only have we been winning, but we've been getting better, which is a big thing. (...) We're becoming a team now, you can see that on the field. (...) The defeat at Fenerbahce helped us, you learn more from defeats. We are now distributing the ball very well in offense. The defense still has room for improvement, as does the attack. But the players are very focused, enjoy coming to the gym and have fun together. (...)

The fans have been outstanding, a sixth-man effect. So far it's been an incredible experience with the people here in the hall. (...)

We took a lot of threes today and luckily we hit a lot of them. (...) Our defensive presence was very good, Nick was our leader there. He's one of the best all-around players in the league and did a great job. (...)”

Andreas Obst: „Someone told me during the game that I needed another three-pointer, so I had that on my mind - this is certainly a special evening. But for now I'm super happy for the team, we're going into the national team break with a 6-0 win at home, it's all very nice right now. (...) I think the work of the last few weeks has paid off. My teammates always had a lot of faith in me, despite a difficult start to the season. But they cheered me on and gave me confidence. I'm very happy to have the guys around me.”

Carsen Edwards: „We take it game by game. We're a good group. It's still a lot of games, we still have a lot to work on and we have to be the best for each other. Hopefully we can do that.”
