He is a world champion, he is a European champion. At the start of the year he was named the EuroLeague’s “Best Pure Shooter,” and with eleven threes in a single game he holds the all-time record in Europe’s top competition. And now Andreas Obst has been named the Basketball Bundesliga’s Player of the Year for the first time — its Most Valuable Player, or MVP.
Almost half the votes
The 29-year-old FC Bayern Basketball international is the first German MVP in 22 years (Pascal Roller in 2004) — and the second FCBB player after Malcolm Delaney, who in 2014 won Munich’s first BBL title under coach Svetislav Pesic. In the 2026 voting, the Munich long-range specialist received almost half of the votes (48.1%), ahead of forward Ibi Watson of cup winners Bamberg (19.1) and Trier guard Jordan Roland (13.5).
Obst found out about the award among his teammates before the final practice at BMW Park for the away game in Ludwigsburg — on the video cube via a greeting message from his grandparents, who, alongside his mother, are his biggest fans. His grandpa once hung up the first basketball hoop for Andi in the garden.
“Many thanks to my teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire Bayern back office. Everyone supports me here in an exceptional way,” said Obst. “This award is really special and means a lot to me. But right now, the only thing that matters is that we can still win another title this year. If we manage that, everyone will be invited by Grandma and Grandpa for rhubarb cake. Their greeting video with the news really got to me emotionally — thank you again.”
Award at the Oldenburg home game on Sunday
The shooting guard has played for Bayern since 2021 and recently extended his contract early through 2029. This season, he is the German champions’ top scorer in the easyCredit BBL with currently 16.5 points per game—the best mark for him since his top-flight debut for Bamberg eleven and a half years ago. In the EuroLeague, the co-captain also led his team this season with a personal best average of 14.5 points (37.8% from three).
The award presentation will take place before FCBB’s final regular-season home game next Sunday (4:30 p.m.) at BMW Park against Oldenburg. For the MVP vote, the BBL clubs’ captains, assistant coaches, former pros, and 140 members of the media cast their ballots.
