Bayern signs Guard Kamar Baldwin

FC Bayern Basketball continues to strengthen its backcourt: The German champion has signed US playmaker Kamar Baldwin, who played last season for Baskonia Vítoria in the EuroLeague and the Spanish ACB. The 27-year-old guard signed a two-year deal with Munich, including an option for another season. Like the five FCBB national team players with the German squad, the American is currently preparing as the starting point guard for the Georgian national team for the 2025 Eurobasket (August 27 – September 14).

“I’m very excited about Munich. Coach Gordie and GM Dragan made a big effort to bring me here,” says the left-hander, who played his second professional season in the BBL for Göttingen (2021–2022). “I know Bayern and the BBL a bit, although a lot has changed. I want to win the BBL and help reach the EuroLeague playoffs.” What does he bring to the table? “I’m a point guard who can play both positions, can create my own shot, but also create for others. I didn’t play my best basketball last season for several reasons. But I feel ready to bring my style to Munich – which is definitely aggressive, on both ends of the court.”

Bayern sports director Dragan Tarlac says: "Kamar is a point guard with the qualities of a leader who always plays for his team. He has steadily developed year by year as a basketball player, climbing all the way to the EuroLeague, and also made an impressive contribution to Georgia's qualification for the EuroBasket. We know he's a great teammate and an equally great personality. We're getting a player whose rise is far from over and who will fully commit and sacrifice himself for the Bayern family."

Kamar Malik Baldwin left his college, Butler University in Indianapolis, as a Top 5 selection in the Big East Conference and with an average of 16.2 points per game. After making his professional debut in Turkey, he shined in Göttingen during the 2021/2022 season as the third-best scorer in the German BBL, averaging 19 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. The following year, he used the platform of the NBA's development league, the G-League, with the Maine Celtics, Boston's farm team, where he averaged 13.1 points and 4.9 assists.

Real Madrid then signed him for two years, but the agreement has now been terminated early. His first EuroLeague season with Rathan-Mayes (12 minutes per game, 5.3 points per game) had started quite promisingly – despite a loss in Munich against Bayern, he scored twelve points in each of his first two games. A turbulent season overall for the Spanish record champions ultimately ended with the ACB title (12.5 minutes per game, 4.7 points per game).

Scorer and Playmaker

After that, he returned to Europe, joining Trento in Italy's Serie A (13.9 points per game, 4.3 assists per game), which also meant competing internationally in the EuroCup. There, Baldwin averaged 15.2 points and 4.5 assists across 16 games. Baskonia signed him a year later. In the EuroLeague (7.1 points, 3.7 assists per game), things were inconsistent for the Basque team, just as in the ACB, where Baldwin stood out positively with 9.8 points per game and nearly 46% shooting from the field before suffering a hand injury in the spring.

For two crucial EuroBasket qualifying games against Finland, Georgia—featuring national hero Tornike Shengelia (FC Barcelona)—added Baldwin last November as a naturalized player. He scored 23 and 22 points in those games, made seven of twelve three-pointers, showed impressive rebounding strength for his 1.85-meter (6'1") height with 13 total rebounds, and dished out 11 assists.

Qualifying for a sixth EuroBasket is a major achievement for the small republic. In the group stage, Georgia will face Italy, the host Cyprus, Spain, Greece, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
“We want to make it past the group stage, and after that, anything is possible,” says Baldwin, who is currently at the Georgian training camp in Latvia.

Kamar Baldwin is married and the father of two children.
