Farewells, fans and a last-minute goal as Reds down Augsburg

Champions FC Bayern brought down the curtain on an excellent Bundesliga campaign with a 5-2 victory over FC Augsburg. Before the goalmouth action, a series of farewells brought the 250 spectators at the Allianz Arena to their feet.

The home side took the lead when Augsburg's Jeffrey Gouweleeuw put through his own goal, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman all finding the net in the first half. André Hahn and Florian Niederlechner scored for the visitors in the second half, but Robert Lewandowski scored his 41st goal this campaign with the final whistle imminent, setting a new Bundesliga record. The result means Bayern finish on 78 points, 13 clear of runners-up RB Leipzig.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Jérôme Boateng, Lucas Hernández and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Kimmich and David Alaba anchored a midfield featuring Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Coman, with Lewandowski as sole striker. Javi Martínez, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala took over from Boateng, Gnabry and Coman on the hour, Corentin Tolisso and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting coming on for Alaba and Müller with 20 minutes to go.

Plain sailing

Bayern were dominant from the start, and Lewandowski saw a header saved before Gouweleeuw put through his own goal when Coman put him under pressure following a Gnabry centre. Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz denied Gnabry before Neuer was called into action by Daniel Caligiuri at the other end. Alaba was denied by Gikiewicz but Bayern doubled the lead when Lewandowski saw an effort saved and Coman hit the post, Gnabry being on hand to mop up.

Augsburg were awarded a penalty when Hernández tripped Niederlechner, but Neuer saved against Caligiuri. Alaba and Lewandowski saw their efforts saved but Kimmich soon unleashed a sumptuous belter that screamed its way into the net. Lewandowski was denied by Gikiewicz before miscuing a header, but Coman soon netted from 20 yards.

Lewy gets his goal

Bayern shifted down a gear after the interval but still threatened in spurts. An Alaba pass only just evaded Lewandowski before the world's best player miscued a header and saw another effort blocked. Augsburg pulled one back when Laszlo Benes' free-kick found Hahn, who headed in. The away side soon scored a second one, Hahn picking up a bad pass and teeing up Niederlechner, who beat Neuer.

There was little goalmouth action until the very end, with all eyes on Lewandowski, who could still break Gerd Müller's historic record of 40 goals in one Bundesliga campaign. The striker took his time to find the net but finally got his goal in the last minute of regular time, Gikiewicz parrying a Sané shot and Lewandowski tapping in.
