Augsburg game should be the 'highlight at the end of our journey'

Just one final push, then it'll be time to enjoy the well-earned reward. On Saturday (live text and webradio commentary from 15:30 CEST on fcbayern.com), FC Bayern host FC Augsburg on their home turf, the Allianz Arena on the last matchday of the 2020/21 season. Following the final whistle, the German record champions will be presented with the Meisterschale. It'll also be the last game in FCB colours for some of the Bayern players and coaching staff. Find out everything you need to know about the Bavarian derby in the preview from fcbayern.com.

The situation for FC Bayern

The men from Munich already wrapped up the championship with two matchdays to go, so the last game of the season is all about one thing. Three very deserving players - Jérôme Boateng, Javi Martínez and David Alaba - are leaving the club. In addition, the derby against FCA will also be the last game with Hermann Gerland, Miroslav Klose and head coach Hansi Flick in the FCB dugout. "I've simply enjoyed the journey I embarked on almost two years ago," reminisced the 56-year-old in his press conference on Friday. Flick's target for Saturday? "I'm hoping for an absolute highlight at the end of our journey."

A first: Bayern will be wearing their brand-new away jerseys for the first time against Augsburg:

Season finale against Augsburg in front of fans

250 spectators will be admitted to the clash with Augsburg, which will create the right atmosphere. "I'm very excited. 250 spectators doesn't sound a lot when you have such a big stadium like the Allianz Arena as your home. Nevertheless, I'm happy that spectators are being allowed into the stadium again and I hope that everything goes well and runs smoothly," said FCB captain Manuel Neuer.

FCA also already achieved their objective for the season before the last matchday. Thanks to last week's 2-0 win against direct rivals Werder Bremen, the club has avoided the drop. Head coach Markus Weinzierl's team can therefore go into the clash with the German champions without feeling any pressure, but of course they still have a big goal: "Robert Lewandowski certainly wants to extend his record, our task is to take him out of the game as best we can to protect Gerd Müller's goal record," the coach explained on Friday. Last weekend Lewandowski scored his 40th goal of the season to equal Der Bomber's record, and one more goal would give him the outright record. "We're thinking of giving one player the job of chasing Lewandowski all over the pitch. Gerd Müller was my idol in my youth and he shared the coaching duties with me at the Bayern reserves. I know him well and appreciate him immensely, so I'd like the record to remain shared and for us to keep an eye on Lewandowski!" the former FC Bayern II player (1995-1999) continued.

Team news for Freiburg vs. Bayern

"Every one of the three who is capable of playing will also play," revealed Flick on Friday. So the fans can certainly look forward to Alaba, Boateng and Martínez making their final appearances. Bayern will however be without Leon Goretzka (thigh muscle strain) and Tanguy Nianzou (red-card suspension) for the last game of the season.

Augsburg will be missing the injured Iago and Felix Uduokhai.

What the coaches say

210521_Flick-FCA-EN

Hansi Flick: "Augsburg are safe. We intend to prove our quality once again and will try to deliver a great game. Stefan Reuter (Augsburg managing director sports - editor's note) was my room-mate at FCB for a long time. I'm happy that he's on the other side for my last game. A Bavarian derby as a farewell is certainly something nice."

Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg head coach): "We're fully focused on FC Bayern, the most difficult task of the season. It's important for us to give a good impression, even as underdogs, and to finish on a positive note. But of course we know about the huge quality our opponents have! Bayern will want to deliver a good game before the presentation of the Meisterschale and also give Hansi Flick a fitting farewell. It'll be a huge challenge for us and we'll have to give it everything!"
