FC Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on Wednesday night, winning the domestic Supercup and rounding off the quintuple in 2020. Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Müller handed Bayern a two-goal lead, Julian Brandt pulling one back late in the first half and Erling Haaland levelling the scored after half-time, but Joshua Kimmich restored Bayern's lead with ten minutes to go.
The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Niklas Süle, Lucas Hernández and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Kimmich and Javi Martínez featured in a twin holding role behind Müller, Tolisso and Kingsley Coman, with Robert Lewandowski up front. Serge Gnabry, Chris Richards, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Zirkzee took over from Coman, Pavard, Martínez and Lewandowski in the closing stages.
Tolisso opens
Once referee Bibiana Steinhaus had set events in motion, there were half-chances at either end in the first quarter-hour of an intense tactical skirmish. Borussia keeper Marwin Hitz proved equal to a Kimmich header before Marco Reus saw an effort deflected wide. Bayern drew first blood on the brake, Lewandowski squaring for Tolisso, whose effort was deflected onto the bar by Hitz, but the Frenchman was on hand to mop up the rebound.
The treble winners were buoyed by the opener, Kimmich warming Hitz gloves and Pavard seeing a shot blocked, although Neuer was called into action by Marco Reus. Bayern doubled the advantage after the half-hour, Müller heading in via the inside of the near post from a fine Davies cross. A setback came shortly before the interval, Haaland inviting Brandt to fire home following a counter.
Kimmich seals it
Dortmund's Thomas Meunier rifled wide after the restart, Haaland levelling the scores when he latched onto a through-ball and beat Neuer. Kimmich miscued from 20 yards before Bayern had Neuer to thank for keeping the scores level when he made an excellent save against Haaland.
The match ebbed now, Passlack hitting the side-netting with 20 minutes to go, but the linesman' flag was up for offside anyway. Ten minutes later, Kimmich nicked the ball off Thomas Delaney's toes and passed to Lewandowski, who squared back, the midfielder seeing his shot parried, but he somehow got a foot to it and restored Bayern's lead. A Müller free-kick from 22 yards went just wide before the full-time whistle sounded and the celebrations began.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Sunday, when they entertain Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.
