Battle of cup specialists

Wednesday evening’s DFB Cup quarter-final between FC Bayern and Schalke 04 (20:45 CET, live ticker and Webradio commentary) sees the two teams with the most experience in the competition come face to face. FCB have played 243 times in the cup, winning 183 of their matches, while the Royal Blues have been involved in 234 ties and won 152 of them. The two sides have faced each other on 11 previous occasions in the competition, with Bayern coming out on top in seven. fcbayern.com has put together some more stats around the cup game.

Regulars in the quarter-final

FCB have reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup in each of the last ten years. No other club can match this record. They’ve also progressed to the semi-finals seven years in a row – an eighth consecutive appearance would be a new record. Schalke, on the other hand, haven’t been this far in the competition since the 2010/2011 season.

Trophy hunters

FC Bayern have 18 DFB Cup trophies to their name, making them the most successful team in the history of the competition. Schalke rank third in the list with five wins, one behind Werder Bremen. The Miners have actually reached the final more times than Bremen (12-10), but they can’t match Bayern’s record of 21 final appearances.

Unbeaten run

FCB are unbeaten in their last 13 meetings with Schalke – all in the Bundesliga. The men from Munich have won ten and drawn three since March 2011, scoring 36 goals and only conceding six. Their last encounter was just a few weeks ago on 4th February when the two sides drew 1-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Siebert in charge again

Daniel Siebert will referee his third FC Bayern match of the season on Wednesday. The 32 year-old from Berlin was in charge for the 1-1 draw against Köln on Matchday 6 as well as the 3-1 win at Mainz 05 on Matchday 13. Siebert will be assisted by Lasse Koslowski and Jan Seidel, with Dr. Robert Kampka as fourth official.
