"Today we also have to mention Thomas Müller, who used space very intelligently and was involved in some of the goals," head coach Hansi Flick said, speaking after the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. With one goal and one assist, the Bavarian native was still in top form against the men from Hesse.
Getting ahead
From the beginning Müller was fully in the game. In the tenth minute, he used the space on the left and crossed the ball to Leon Goretzka, who scored the first goal of the evening. "That's simply Thomas's quality, that he doesn't just blindly cross the ball in, but lifts his head up," the goalscorer said, praising his team-mate. Although Müller had actually deliberately played the ball into that position, he did not specifically target Goretzka: "I honestly did not see Leon, I just played the ball into open space and expected one of us to run into it."
League best on horizon
With his 17th assist, Müller surpassed his personal best from the 2017/18 season and equalled another record: Since the beginning of detailed data collection in 2004/05, only Kevin De Bruyne, in 2014/15, and Jadon Sancho, in 2019/20, have had as many assists after 27 matchdays. The league record, held by Leipzig's Emil Forsberg, who assisted 22 goals in 2016/17, is now well within reach.
Müller masterclass
Müller also proved his own ability in front of goal once more against Eintracht. After a nice cross by Alphonso Davies, who also played well against the men from Hesse, the 30-year-old took the ball down well and slipped it past SGE keeper Kevin Trapp. It was the 24th time he has had a hand in a goal this season; 20 of the goals + assists have come since Flick took office - more than any other FCB player. He needs just one more to match his own personal best in a single season.
Winning mentality
The 5-2 victory against Eintracht was Müller's 249th Bundesliga victory with Bayern, bringing him level with Sepp Maier in the all-time standings. Oliver Kahn is still top of the list with 260 wins in FCB colours, but Müller is likely to have this record in his sights soon.
With the 5-2 victory over Frankfurt, FC Bayern have put themselves in an excellent position for the top of the table trip to Dortmund on Tuesday evening. Here's the full match report of the game against Eintracht:
