A hard-fought but well-deserved victory in Stuttgart not only brought three points for FC Bayern, but also many interesting facts, figures and moments. fcbayern.com has summarised the most interesting stats after the away win on Bundesliga Matchday 9.
1. Attack on the hunt for the record
Douglas Costa's goal shortly before the end of the game to make it 3-1 was the 31st goal for the Bavarians this campaign. Only Eintracht Frankfurt in 1974/75 scored as many goals at this point. Eintracht eventually scored 89 league goals back then, but if Bayern continue like this, they could break the 100-goal mark again, as they did last season.
2. Bayern's favourite opponents
Another Bundesliga record was set today: FC Bayern beat VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga for the 65th time, joint tied with the record for any two teams against each other. The tied record-holder? Bayern themselves, with 65 league wins against Hamburg.
3. Goalscoring wingers
Ruthless in front of goal: Coman added to his tally against VfB.
For the first time in his career, Kingsley Coman has scored in three consecutive competitive matches for FC Bayern. The Frenchman finished into the bottom corner of the near post and brought FCB back into the game against VfB. He had already scored the important equaliser last weekend in the 1-1 draw with Bremen, and during the week he shone as he scored against Salzburg in the Champions League.
4. No easy game for the newly promoted
What a run! Bayern have won 22 of their last 23 games against newly promoted sides. The only time Bayern have not been able to secure three points in this run was in April 2019, when 1. FC Nürnberg earned a credible point in a 1-1 draw.
5. Fully on track
FC Bayern got off to their best start to a campaign in four years, taking 22 points in the first nine matches. Back then they took 23 points.
6. Returnee scores after coming on
Costa put the game to bed when he scored Bayern’s third goal in the closing stages.
Douglas Costa scored his first competitive goal for FC Bayern since returning to the club in October. His last goal for the Bavarians dates back to Bayern’s 3-0 Bundesliga victory in March 2017. His goal against Stuttgart was Bayern’s fifth goal scored by a sub, a Bundesliga best-mark this term!
7. Magnets in the frame of the goal
FCB are top in another category, alongside Stuttgart. Bayern hit the woodwork for the seventh time this season when Lewandowski’s early header crashed off the post.
8. Tanguy debut
The 69th minute was a very special moment for new signing Tanguy Nianzou. The 18-year-old made his debut for Bayern when he came on for Jérôme Boateng against Stuttgart. “Tanguy was thrown in at the deep end, it wasn’t easy,” coach Hansi Flick said in praise of the youngster: “So he can be proud, and I’m glad he made his first appearance for us.”
