Quality of the very first order! There's no other way to describe Leroy Sané's goal away at second division club Holstein Kiel. It was the 49th minute of the tie in the 2nd round of the DFB Cup when Sané took a free kick with the score at 1-1. 20 yards from goal, and just to the right-hand-side, Sané took three steps and then curled the ball into the top right-hand corner of the goal with the inside of his left foot for a 2-1 lead. For a long time Bayern looked like sure winners, but Kiel forced extra time with a last-gasp goal, before progressing in the competition via a penalty shoot-out. But Sané's magic goal was without question one of the highlights of the evening.
FC Bayern's fans honoured the German international's performance and voted his eye-catching goal as their Goal of the Month for January. With an outstanding 67% of the votes, he demoted goalscorer Robert Lewandowski and his reflex goal, scored to make it 1-0 in the 2-1 win against SC Freiburg, down into second place (14%). Third place went to David Alaba's long-range shot from over 25 yards to cap off a 4-0 win over FC Schalke 04 (10%).
Seventh goal for Sané
It was Sané's seventh goal in a competitive match since joining Bayern from Manchester City last summer and his second in 2021, having scored in the first Bundesliga match after the short winter break against 1. FSV Mainz 05 to draw Bayern level at 2-2. In the end, the Bavarians celebrated a clear-cut 5-2 win after going 2-0 down, enabling them to maintain their top position in the table.
Congratulations Jamal! Youngster Musiala was voted as the scorer of the best goal of the month in December by the fans.
