Robert Lewandowski has been named the Best FIFA Men’s Player for the second year in a row. Captains and coaches of all national teams, fans and media representatives from around the world voted for the FC Bayern striker, who last season broke Gerd Müller’s single-season scoring record in the Bundesliga with 41 goals. He also became only the second player after Der Bomber to reach 300 goals in Germany’s top flight after his hat-trick at the weekend in the 4-0 win over 1. FC Köln. As well as Lewandowski, FC Bayern would also like to congratulate captain Manuel Neuer, the previous winner of the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper, for his third-place finish this year.
Reaction to The Best FIFA Football Awards
President Herbert Hainer: “Congratulations to Robert Lewandowski! He’s made history once again by being named the best player in the world. He has not let up for a single moment since his award last year. He is a perpetual goalscoring machine. The fact he has now been honoured for the second time in a row is further proof that he is one of the all-time greats in football history. The same goes for Manuel Neuer, who we all would have loved to see retain his title as the world’s best goalkeeper. He’s a guarantor for success and his play has set the standards for all subsequent generations of goalkeepers. Nevertheless, congratulations also to Edouard Mendy.”
CEO Oliver Kahn: “Robert Lewandowski is a phenomenon. Once he’s reached one peak, he’s already thinking about the next. It is therefore more than justified that he’s won the honour of the Best FIFA Men’s Player for the second time in a row. We also would have liked to see Manuel Neuer win the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award again. Congratulations to Edouard Mendy, who also deserves this title. FC Bayern is proud and happy to have two such exceptional players and people in its ranks in Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer. One scores goals without end, the other stops them at the other end of the field. Both set standards on and off the pitch.“
Board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic: “Robert deserves this title. It’s a shame that Manuel didn’t also win. We all would’ve wished it for him. For me, he was the best, but of course also congratulations to Edouard Mendy. Everyone at FC Bayern knows that Robert and Manuel have played a major role in our club’s success. Robert has been performing consistently at a world-class level for years now. He has unswervingly focused his life on his career. He shows discipline, desire and quality in every training session, which is why he’s always optimally prepared. The fact he has retained his title as the world’s best footballer underlines his outstanding status, and that will continue to motivate him for this season. Robert loves to set records. We’re proud that he has added so many unique chapters to FC Bayern’s history.”
