7 standout moments of Serge Gnabry in a Bayern shirt

Bayern’s number 7 is staying until 2026! Serge Gnabry announced his contract extension until 2026 on Saturday afternoon during the Allianz FC Bayern Team Presentation. The forward, who celebrated his 27th birthday last Thursday, will therefore continue in the German record champions’ attack and is the latest key player, after Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller, to commit his long-term future to Bayern. A good reason to look back at 7 special moments from our number 7 in the red shirt:

21 June 2019: Player of the Season 2018/19

FC Bayern and Serge Gnabry - it’s been a success story from the start. The winger was crowned Player of the Season by fans at the end of his debut 2018/19 season, narrowly pipping his good friend Joshua Kimich. The then 23-year-old became a German champion, DFB Cup and Supercup winner for the first time. After making his debut on 1 September 2018 in a 3-0 win at hometown club VfB Stuttgart and opening his account on 3 November 2018 in a 1-1 draw against SC Freiburg, Gnabry ended the campaign with 13 goals and six assists.

1 October 2019: Finest hour in Champions League

This evening was perhaps Gnabry’s best performance in a Bayern performance so far. On 1 October 2019, the winger - still wearing the number 22 - bagged four goals in a 7-2 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stage. In what was his 50th competitive appearance for FCB, the former Arsenal man also laid on a goal for Robert Lewandowski, as the whole of Europe stood up and took notice.

4 July 2020: Start of golden summer

After winning their eighth consecutive league title, Gnabry & Co sealed another trophy on this July evening at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Hansi Flick’s team defeated Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4-2 in the DFB Cup final, with key man Gnabry scoring the second goal from a Kimmich assist. It wouldn’t be the last trophy of that year…

August 2020: Gnabry shines in UCL tournament

After that outstanding display at Tottenham in the group stage, Gnabry carried his form throughout the whole of the 2019/20 UCL campaign, playing a leading role on the way to the club’s sixth European triumph. With nine goals he was the third-highest scorer in the competition behind Lewandowski (15) and Erling Haaland (10). Two of those goals came in the round of 16 against Chelsea, while he also shone in the 8-2 victory over Barcelona with a goal and an assist. And then came 19 August, when Gnabry netted a brace in the 3-0 semi-final win over Olympique Lyonnais, including a left-footed thunderbolt to open the scoring. What next? The long-awaited trophy on 23 August after a 1-0 win in the final against PSG.

18 September 2020: New season, same Gnabry

The wing wizard picked up where he left off in the season after the treble. In the opening game of the 2020/21 campaign, Gnabry provided three of the goals in the 8-0 drubbing of Schalke. There was no stopping Flick’s men, who picked up both the German and European Super Cups to leave them one title away from the sextuple…

11 February 2021: Gnabry & Co celebrate sixth title in a year

In February 2021, this Bayern group immortalised themselves. The 1-0 victory over Tigres UANL in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup made it six titles in the space of a calendar year for the Munich men! Gnabry assisted Lewandowski for the opener in the 2-0 win against Al Ahly in the semi-finals, again underlining his immense value to the Bayern generation of Kimmich, Goretzka and Co.

14 December 2021: 5 goal involvements against boyhood club

Gnabry remained one of the first names on the teamsheet under Julian Nagelsmann last term, with his highlights including a brace in the 5-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen and a brilliant volley in the 3-1 title-clinching victory against Borussia Dortmund. At the end of it, he and his teammates lifted FCB’s 10th successive Meisterschale. His best performance of the season probably came shortly before Christmas against his hometown club. The German international was involved in all five goals in the 5-0 win at Stuttgart, scoring three himself and setting up another two.
