FC Bayern are still on course for the title after Thomas Tuchel’s side claimed an excellent 6-0 win over Schalke on Saturday afternoon to remain in control at the top. “It was a deserved win. We had really good energy and radiance on the pitch,” summarised the head coach. Captain Thomas Müller also praised the team’s “lively start” and was particularly pleased about his important opening goal. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the game.
Reaction to Bayern vs. Schalke
Thomas Tuchel: “It was a deserved win. We were very alert, combined quickly and fluidly. We created chances quickly, but didn’t take them initially. We then stepped it up early in the second half, which gave us assurance and confidence. It was the next step in the right direction. It’s now about having a good week of training. We had really good energy and radiance on the pitch. It’s important that confidence is coming back. But it’s no reason to be euphoric. We have to take this energy.”
Thomas Müller: “It was a good and lively start from us. The way Schalke play is very awkward for attackers because they play man to man. You don’t have a second free. But the disadvantage of this approach is that when you’ve played through this one-to-one defending with a dribble or a quick one-two, then they quickly fall apart with a good pass in behind. And when we did that, our chances were good. I’m pleased I could open the scoring today. It was a great feeling. The Arena exploded and we kept going. My heart is red. Well, everyone’s is red, but mine is maybe a bit more red.”
Matthijs de Ligt: “Today it was very important that we played with a clear mind. We did that very well. The win was very important for us, but obviously also for our forwards. We haven’t taken our chances that well in recent weeks, but today we scored six goals and created a lot of chances. I think that the win was really important for us as a team.”
Reaction from the Schalke camp
Peter Knäbel (sporting director): “It’s a clear setback. But it doesn’t change anything in terms of our fighting approach. We’ve always got back up. It’s about getting back up one more time than we fall down.”
Thomas Reis (head coach): “Congratulations to Bayern. We deserved to lose, also by the margin. We wanted to cause Bayern problems. We didn’t manage that. Bayern showed more aggression out of possession.”
Marius Bülter (forward): “We didn’t get stuck into challenges from the start and were often a step to late and were chasing around. We allowed them too many chances. That’s how you end up losing a game 6-0.”
