Just two days after the defeat to Estudiantes de la Plata, the young talents showed character to come from 1-0 down and claim a first win in their second friendly of the trip to Argentina. The success marks an important milestone in their preparations and gives Roy Makaay's charges a boost for the challenges ahead.
"Big step forward"
"The team worked together as one and celebrated the goals together, even on the subs' bench," praised the Dutch head coach. "Despite the lack of time for training between the two games, the team took a big step forward together and achieved a deserved win."
The newly formed Bayern XI started well and put together some promising moves. However, after an even early phase with chances at both ends, the World Squad fell behind in the 30th minute when Argentinos Juniors' number 9, Diego Porcel, made it 1-0.
Reinvigorated after the break
But Makaay clearly found the right words at half-time as his side showed a marked improvement after the restart. With some fresh legs on – also to give as many players as possible the chance to stake their claim – the World Squad set about a comeback in the second period.
In the 56th minute, Bayern's number 10 Siam Yapp benefited from his team's hard work and equalised with a well-placed shot, scoring the FC Bayern World Squad's first goal of this season. With wind in their sails, the visitors pushed for the win – and got it. Victor Orakpo fired the World Squad in front and ultimately to victory, with his goal proving to be the winner.
That also pleased Makaay. "Every player is determined to prove themselves and realise their dream of becoming a professional footballer," said the ex-Bayern striker. "We want to get across to them the requirements that have to be met both on and off the pitch if they want to become a true pro. Siam's goal gave the team fresh motivation and energy for the game."
A visit to the pros
After the successful second friendly and some short victory celebrations, the FC Bayern World Squad players got to enjoy a trip to the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, where the young talents watched the Argentinos Juniors first team from the stands. The home team won 3-1 against Defensa y Justicia.
Despite an eventful day, the FC Bayern World Squad have little time to rest. Makaay's team will be looking to demonstrate their new-found confidence next Tuesday, when they face the next big test with the friendly against River Plate (14:30 CEST). The game will be available to watch as a free live stream on the FC Bayern YouTube channel – don't miss it!
