Bayern’s final game of 2023 sees them head to Wolfsburg on Wednesday evening, which is a very good omen. The Munich club haven’t been beaten in their final Bundesliga match of a calendar year since a 3-2 loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach in December 1984. That run of 38 games is by far the longest in the German top flight’s history, encompassing 26 wins and 14 draws. The last 10 have all been victories. But it isn’t the only streak Bayern are out to defend in Wolfsburg. Here’s the stats and facts on the final outing of the year.
Impressive run against the Wolves
Bayern are unbeaten in their last 18 competitive meetings with Wolfsburg, winning 16 of those. The last time FCB were left with nothing against the Wolves was in August 2015 in the Supercup, losing out on the title on penalties. Bayern’s average of 2.5 points per Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg is also their best return against any team they have faced more than 12 times in the top flight.
Milestone for Musiala
Jamal Musiala could make his 100th Bundesliga appearance on Wednesday, doing so at the age of 20 years and 297 days. No Bayern player has ever reached that milestone number at a younger age, while only Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Julian Draxler have got there quicker all told. Musiala has so far scored 25 goals and provided 18 assists in his 99 league outings for Bayern. Chances are he will add to that total in Wolfsburg given the fact he has more goals (four) and more goal contributions (five) against the Wolves than any other club in the Bundesliga.
A clean sheet every other game
Sunday’s 3-0 win over VfB Stuttgart was the seventh time this campaign that Bayern’s defence has remained intact. Although Thomas Tuchel’s men have played a game fewer than the rest of the league, it is still the highest number of clean sheets in the Bundesliga and the club’s best total in six years. Back then Bayern also had seven after 14 outings in 2017/18.
Turn it up in the second half
The champions have scored 28 goals in the second half of Bundesliga games this season, which is the most of any team. It is in fact over four times more than Wolfsburg, who rank bottom in that regard with only six goals.
Kane set to pass Kolo Muani
Harry Kane’s brace against Stuttgart at the weekend saw him set yet more Bundesliga records. One of those was his 20 goals after only 14 appearances, smashing the previous best for reaching that total of 21 games by Uwe Seeler. In total, the England captain has been directly involved in 25 Bundesliga goals (20 goals, five assists), meaning he is only one away from matching the 26 that Randal Kolo Muani topped the charts with last season.
Sane unmatched across Europe
Leroy Sane set up Kane for the opener on Sunday to bring up his 16th goal contribution of this Bundesliga campaign. The 27-year-old’s combined eight goals and eight assists mean the forward has now set a new personal best for an entire Bundesliga season and is a leader across the continent as the only player in Europe’s top five leagues to have both eight goals and eight assists in league action in 2023/24.
Kane was again one of the key men for Bayern against Stuttgart on Sunday:
