Reaction to the home match against Mainz
Thomas Tuchel: “Mainz were very good opponents in the first half. We maintained shape and supported each other. We trusted in our structure and our strength in the individual duels, which is a very good sign. We had good moments in possession and in transition. We had many chances and eventually we used them. We are very happy with the result. Today, Joshua Kimmich was particularly good and showed a very good performance. Leon Goretzka was the man of the match - he is doing very well at the moment. Serge Gnabry scored a fantastic goal with an intuitive and unconventional finish.”
Manuel Neuer: “We were well positioned today and had the confidence to be able to hurt our opponents. That was key. We remained cool even if Mainz man-marked us all over the pitch. We had good positioning, were very assured in possession and made few mistakes.”
Harry Kane: “I hope this game acts as a kind of restart for the rest of the season. We used the momentum today. It was a great performance of ours from start to finish. We took our chances against tough opponents. Now we have to continue showing these kinds of performances in the upcoming weeks. I feel good right now and we're creating a lot of chances as a team. There are still a few games left, so I want to keep adding more goals. Of course, I'm also happy with my assist for Jamal. I saw him from the corner of my eye. That might have been one of the best assists of my entire career, and it's great that Jamal was able to finish so fantastically.”
Leon Goretzka: “It was a very convincing victory of ours throughout the 90 minutes. We produced a very good and steady performance, and finally we scored many goals again. It's obviously much more fun that way. Against Lazio, we really felt the pressure. In the end, however, these are the games you love and you want to be a part of as a Bayern player. We maintained our flow today. Should Leverkusen stumble, we have to be there.”
Reaction from the Mainz camp
Martin Schmidt (Mainz sporting director): “To lose 8-1 is very painful. We wanted to be brave, maybe we were too brave. Eventually we got overconfident and were punished by a totally efficient Bayern team. Today we learned a lesson of how not to play here in Munich.”
Bo Henriksen (Mainz coach): “The first goal hurt a lot. Of course, we're disappointed because we should have defended much better as a team. We're still battling relegation together and we still have many finals to play. We have to collect the necessary points in the upcoming games.”
Robin Zentner (Mainz goalkeeper): “We defended far too badly, we didn't foul in the right moments. In counter-attacking situations, we gave Bayern the possibility to turn towards us and attack us with speed. We were simply too far away from our men in the decisive moments. We didn't even come close to getting a result today.”
