Jamal Musiala celebrates against Denmark

Musiala scores - Germany into EURO quarters with five Bayern players

The German national team are among the best eight teams in Europe in their home EURO! Julian Nagelsmann's side booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a 2-0 win over Denmark on Saturday night. Bayern's Jamal Musiala netted the second goal, 15 minutes after Kai Havertz had broken the deadlock with a penalty awarded for handball in an eventful match. Manuel Neuer again produced some impressive saves, while Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sané were also in the starting line-up from an FCB point of view. Thomas Müller was an unused substitute.

Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich played the full 90, Leroy Sané came off after 88 minutes, goalscorer Musiala after 81.

Neuer with brilliant save after weather delay

Germany started the contest forcefully but failed to take the lead in the opening quarter of an hour. Nico Schlotterbeck thought he'd made it 1-0 after just four minutes but the referee disallowed the goal due to a handball by Kimmich in the build-up. The game flattened out somewhat after that, until the 35th minute, when a thunderstorm caused a delay of around 20 minutes. Germany came back better when play resumed but still couldn't find a goal. At the other end, Neuer rescued his side with a top-class save from Rasmus Hojlund on the stroke of half-time.

The start of the second period revolved around Denmark's Joachim Andersen. First he scored the apparent opener, only for his strike to be ruled out following a VAR check for a marginal offside decision against Thomas Delaney. Shortly after that, the video assistant was involved again as Andersen blocked a cross from David Raum with his arm – penalty to Germany. Havertz stepped up and coolly converted. The hosts remained on the front foot in Dortmund and doubled their lead on 68 minutes, Musiala latching onto a sublime ball from Schlotterbeck and slotting into the far corner to make it 2-0, which is how it finished.

Quarter-final against Spain or Georgia

Germany's next match will now be on Friday 5 July in Stuttgart (kick-off 18:00 CEST), where they face either Spain or Georgia, who meet in the round of 16 on Sunday night at 21:00 CEST. The Germans already have good memories of the Swabian city from this tournament, having beaten Hungary 2-0 there in the second group game.
