Five more Bayern players secured their places in the knockout stage of Euro 2024 on Tuesday evening. Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman (France), Harry Kane (England), Matthijs de Ligt (Netherlands) and Konrad Laimer (Austria) will all be in the round of 16.
Top spot for Kane’s England
Kane and England were already confirmed in the last 16 ahead of kick-off but secured first place in Group C with a goalless draw against Slovenia in Cologne. The Bayern striker captained his country as usual and played the full 90 minutes. “It was about winning the group. We’ve done that. It was a hard game. We played better than last time. We were lacking a bit in the final third, but we defended well,” he said afterwards.
As group winners, England will now face a third-placed team in Gelsenkirchen on 30 June. Denmark finished second in the section and will play against Germany in Dortmund on 29 June.
Laimer’s Austria also top
A thrilling 3-2 over the Netherlands saw Austria finish at the summit of a difficult Group D, ahead of France, the Dutch and Poland. It means Laimer’s side will face the runners-up of Group F (Turkey, Czech Republic or Georgia) in Leipzig on 2 July.
It was non-stop action in Berlin in the day’s early game as the Dutch twice levelled against Austria. A Donyell Malen own goal and Romano Schmid strike had put Ralf Rangnick’s side ahead, but Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay hit back each time. Ex-Bayern man Marcel Sabitzer’s strike in the 80th minute finally settled matters. Laimer came on in the 62nd minute, while De Ligt was an unused sub for the Dutch.
Despite defeat, the Oranje are still through to the last 16. Their haul of four points is definitely enough to finish among the four best third-placed teams. Who they will face is still to be determined.
France draw with Poland
France only managed a 1-1 draw with already eliminated Poland in their final group game. Upamecano and Coman finish Group D in second place behind Austria with five points. Les Bleus will now face the runners-up of Group E (Romania, Belgium, Slovakia or Ukraine) in Düsseldorf on 1 July.
Kylian Mbappé’s first Euros goal put the French ahead from the penalty spot after 56 minutes in Dortmund, before former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski also levelled from 12 yards on 79 minutes. As he’d done in the first two group games, Upamecano played the full 90 minutes in the France defence. Coman didn’t feature.
