As head of performance at FC Bayern, Walter Gfrerer will be responsible for athletics and performance across the club from 1 July. In this role, he will be responsible for both the men's and women's teams as well as the youth teams at the FC Bayern Campus. The 51-year-old Austrian worked as an athletic coach at VfL Wolfsburg last season and previously worked for AS Monaco as a performance manager and at RB Salzburg as a conditioning coach.

Max Eberl, FC Bayern board member for sport: "We are delighted to have recruited Walter Gfrerer as head of performance for FC Bayern. He brings a wealth of experience from his various positions and will provide new impetus. In general, we have reorganised the sports division of the board in order to better meet the constantly growing challenges in top international football. In doing so, it was important for us to consciously focus on people who know what FC Bayern stands for – and where it wants to go. We are convinced that our club has a highly professional and optimal set-up for the future behind the scenes, too."
As part of this structural realignment, Kathleen Krüger, former head of team management & project lead for sport, will take a staff position in the sport board division as senior leading expert for sport strategy & development, in order to coordinate and evaluate the connections and synergies between all areas of sport and to optimise them with those responsible.
Maciej Jagiellowicz takes over the position of team leader in team management in the first-team department, and Samuel Geiler will join his team from FC Bayern's partner support department. Since 1 January, Bastian Wernscheid, at the club since 2017 and in team management for the previous three years, has been supporting board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund as a sporting advisor.
