Düren reaction - sporting director Christoph Freund: 'Of course we want to play better'

FC Bayern could only manage a 1-1 draw in their second pre-season friendly against Regionalliga side 1. FC Düren. The Bavarians pinned their hosts back for a long time and the final stage in particular was nervy for Düren on the bumpy pitch. However, they were unable to score more than one goal against the spirited Düren defence.

The reaction to the match at Düren

Christoph Freund (sporting director): "It wasn't a good performance and you noticed that we're tired. It wasn't easy to play football, but of course we want to play better and have more fun with it - we struggled with that today. It was power play in the final 30 minutes but we didn't create as many chances as we wanted. We'll just take that from the friendly. The internationals are now coming back, the group is getting bigger all the time, which is also good for training. The young players did well."

Max Eberl (board member for sport): "Despite the fact that many players are still absent, you expect that you embrace the game differently and a different willingness is there. The second half was considerably better than the first. When the internationals aren't there yet, players really want to play their way into focus - that didn't happen today! The young lads, on the other hand, are doing well. It was like a cup game with highly motivated opponents, who I pay great respect to. Nevertheless, we should win the game. The majority of the internationals will come back now and be on the Asia tour, then we have a short time until the cup game. We need to keep getting used to each other, keep internalising the new ideas in the short time we have."

Adam Matuszczyk (1. FC Düren, formerly 1. FC Köln and Poland among others): "It's obviously a special feeling. We knew it would be a tough game, but we produced a decent performance and gave a good account of ourselves. We're very thankful to Bayern that they came here for a friendly and gave us the opportunity to play against them. It's something special for every one of us."
