The French U23 team, including FC Bayern's new signing Michael Olise, lost to Spain in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games football tournament on Friday evening. Les Tricolores lost in the cruellest possible way at the Parc des Princes in Paris, going down 5-3 after extra time to leave them with the silver medal.
Max Eberl, FC Bayern board member for sport: "Congratulations to Michael Olise and the French national team on winning Olympic silver! With his strong performances across the whole tournament, he's proven that can also be worth his weight in gold for FC Bayern."
France took the lead with 11 minutes gone in the final through Stuttgart's Enzo Millot. However, Spain then turned the game on its head with three goals in the space of just 10 minutes. Fermín López struck twice, with Álex Baena also finding the net. However, Thierry Henry's men did not give up and fought back - started by a sharp free kick from Olise, which Spain defender Juan Miranda diverted into his own yet in the 78th minute. Jean-Philippe Mateta then equalised with a penalty in stoppage time to make it 3-3 and force extra time. But Sergio Camello restored the lead for the Spaniards in minute 100, before sealing the win with his second goal in the 120th.
Olise was again at the heart of France's attacking play and played the full 120 minutes, but couldn't prevent the defeat in the final. After a hugely impressive tournament with two goals and five assists, the winger will now get his Bayern career started.
