It was clear even before kick-off that England’s UEFA Nations League clash with Finland on Tuesday evening was going to be a special one for Harry Kane, but the Bayern striker made doubly sure of that as he marked his 100th cap with a brace in the 2-0 win at Wembley.
Kane: “A great evening”
“It was a great evening for me. I’m really proud to have reached 100 caps. There’s been a lot of talk, but I want to score goals and help the team, so it was great I managed that,” said the England captain, who received a standing ovation from the fans when substituted off after 79 minutes.
After a goalless first half, in which Kane had one effort ruled out for offside, the Bayern man put the Three Lions ahead on 57 minutes with a thumping effort from inside the box. He then swept home his and England’s second of the evening from Noni Madueke’s square ball to extend his tally as the country’s record goalscorer to 68.
Kane received a golden cap ahead of kick-off to mark becoming the 10th player to reach 100 appearances for England’s men. Peter Shilton’s record of 125 is certainly within reach for the 31-year-old, but the important thing for the Bayern forward it to keep doing his job of scoring: “I try not to set myself any limits for what I can achieve. I know I’ll get chances when I play in this team. And when I get chances, I can score lots of goals.”
Germany battle to Dutch draw
Germany remain top of Group A3 thanks to a point in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening. New captain Joshua Kimmich played the full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw at the Johan Cruyff Arena, while Jamal Musiala came off after 89 minutes and Aleksandar Pavlovic came on in the 64th.
“It wasn’t our day today like against Hungary. We’ll learn from games like this against the Dutch. There were a few losses of possession, like before the goal we conceded. We need to be cleverer,” said Musiala, who had been involved in four of Germany’s five goals against Hungary three days earlier. “There are also lots of positives we can take. It’s a process. The mood in the team is really good. We’re playing good football. It’s fun.”
After going behind inside two minutes through Tijani Reijnders, Julian Nagelsmann’s team turned things around in the first half through late strikes from Deniz Undav and Kimmich. But the hosts responded straight after the break through Denzel Dumfries. Germany and the Netherlands are now both tied on four points at the top of their section, with the former ahead on goal difference.
World Cup qualifier win for Kim
Minjae Kim and South Korea registered an important win in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup as they beat Oman 3-1 in Muscat. Hee-chan Hwang opened the scoring before a Seung-hyun Jung own goal on the stroke of half time levelled things. Late goals from Heung-min Son and Min-kyu Joo ensured victory for the Koreans, though. Kim played the full 90 minutes, as he’d done on Thursday against Palestine. South Korea currently sit second in their group with four points from two games. The top two automatically qualify for the World Cup in two years.
Davies and Canada held by Mexico
Captain Alphonso Davies played the full 90 minutes as Canada’s friendly with Mexico ended goalless in Arlington, Texas. The Bayern defender also played all of last Saturday's 2-1 win against the USA.
Tel’s U21s with comfortable win
Mathys Tel came on in the 77th minute of France U21’s 2-0 win in Euro 2025 qualifying against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Maghnes Akliouche and a Hugo Ekitike penalty did the job for the hosts in Le Mans, who are currently second in Group H with 13 points from six matches, three behind Slovenia but with a game in hand.
