The ball moves back and forth between the players on the Säbener Straße training pitch at some speed. A quick touch, and the ball is then swiftly passed on to the opposite player. It is a high intensity of training at FC Bayern, and right in amongst it all is Leroy Sané. It’s been a little over a month since the forward got back on the training ground to begin his recovery with running drills. Since then, he’s been working hard in training so that he can very soon be back on the pitch again for FC Bayern.
Sané: “Everything going as planned so far”
“I feel fit, everything is going as planned so far. I was able to join in with the first team training sessions. It went well, I had no problems, and I hope that it continues like that”, said the 28-year-old, who had undergone a minimally invasive groin surgery immediately following Germany’s exit from the Euros this summer. Towards the end of last season, Sané struggled with repeated problems in his adductor area and often pushed himself to his limit during his appearances. For that reason, he wants to choose the moment he makes his comeback carefully and does not want to rush things: “We have deliberately left it open to give me the time, until I can say that everything feels perfect,” explained Sané. “We are on the right track. We’ll see when the time comes.”
With many of his teammates having travelled to their national teams following the weekend’s Bundesliga game, the winger is sweating it out in Munich during the international break. Head coach Vincent Kompany has scheduled three training sessions during the match-free week. Sané was able to fully take part in the first one on Monday morning and is clearly enjoying the new dynamic in training. Once a teammate of former defender Kompany at Manchester City, Sané now listens to the Belgian coach’s instructions. “I was delighted the first time I met him again. He’s a great guy,” revealed Sané. “I’ve also now experienced how well he conducts training. The coaches all have great energy, Vincent Kompany has real charisma.”
Aiming high this season
Sané already has a clear idea of what the rest of the season could look like after his return: “We absolutely have to win the league again. But another aim is to win the DFB Cup. I haven't won that with Bayern yet, so it's right at the top of my list - and of course the Champions League!”
Many of Sané's teammates are currently on international duty:
