Augsburg reaction - Joshua Kimmich: ‘Knew the spaces would open up at some point’

A confident FC Bayern relished in their victory after their home match against Augsburg. On Friday evening, the side from Munich picked up where they had left off before the international break and could celebrate a 3-0 win over FC Augsburg that was never in doubt, courtesy of a second-half hat-trick from Harry Kane. “I know how important the win was tonight, and I can really appreciate it,” said a delighted head coach Vincent Kompany after the match. “We kept a clean sheet, had several chances and deserved to win in the end” summarised Joshua Kimmich. fcbayern.com has compiled the post-match reaction.

Vincent Kompany: “It’s normal for it not to be easy – after all it’s a Bundesliga game. We had 33 attempts at goal and very often found ourselves inside their box. But we remained patient and continued to show that we wanted to score goals. When you’re in the penalty area as often as we were, it’s normal that there will be a penalty given at some point. I’m never satisfied because I want us to always be improving. I know how important the win was tonight, and I can really appreciate it.”

Harry Kane: “Augsburg are well organised; they defended deep in their own half and they made life difficult for us. We’ve experienced that several times this season, but we stayed calm and simply kept on pushing. We also had our chances in the first half, so we have to be more ruthless. The penalty opened the door and from then on it became easier for us. There are important weeks ahead for us but the team is ready. We’re feeling good and we’ve got to keep this momentum going.”

Joshua Kimmich: “Unfortunately it took a long time before we could score the first goal. But we were without doubt the dominant team throughout the entire game. We kept a clean sheet, had several chances and deserved to win 3-0 in the end. Even if there weren’t floods of chances in the first half, it felt pretty good. That’s why we were calm at half-time. We knew the spaces would open up at some point. Augsburg put a lot into the first half and to keep that up over 90 minutes isn’t easy.”

Reaction from the Augsburg camp

Jess Thorup (coach): “I think we did very well for long periods of the game and didn’t give away anything at the back. Of course, we had hoped for one or two attacking moves, but unfortunately they were too few and far between. And at the start of the second half I had the feeling that we were under even more pressure. From our perspective, the two penalties were a little unlucky. Of course, I feel very sorry for the team – they really put everything in for 60 to 70 minutes.”

Marius Wolf (full-back): “We knew we had to endure a lot, and we really did. Of course, in attack it wasn’t our best game; we didn’t have many moments. But I think we tested Bayern, so that’s why it stings for it to be decided in the end by two penalties. It’s a shame and it’s annoying, but we have to keep going.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj (midfielder): “The positive thing is that we didn’t concede much against Bayern, and even when we did it was not the high-quality chances that Bayern are used to having. But what we have to criticise is our play on the ball. If you want to get something against Bayern, you have to create something when you have the ball. Today, that was extremely difficult because Bayern were incredibly strong in the counter-press – it’s exhausting. Nevertheless, we won’t leave this game feeling bad because we were able to keep it open for so long.”
