Facts ahead of Bayern vs. Celtic in the Champions League

Bayern have one foot in the Champions League last 16 as they prepare to host Celtic at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. The Bavarians hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of this play-off tie after last week’s win in Glasgow. Find out which stats point to Bayern progression and in which categories Joshua Kimmich leads the way in our pre-match facts and stats.

First-leg win a good sign?

Bayern have progressed in their last 13 Champions League knockout ties in which they won the first leg. The last time they failed to do so was an away-goals defeat to Inter Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16 (1-0 win in first leg, 3-2 loss in second). Bayern also go into the return fixture having not lost any of their last 20 Champions League home games (W16, D4). That is the longest run of any club competing in the competition this season. The only longer such streak in the Champions League lasted 29 games between March 1998 and April 2002.

Good record against Scots

Scottish teams tend to only leave Munich with fond memories instead of good results. Bayern have won each of their last five games against clubs from Scotland and have never lost a meeting at home (W7, D3). Vincent Kompany’s home record in the Champions League is also impressive, winning all four games in charge of Bayern. Only two coaches have ever won their first five Champions League fixtures at home in charge of the Bavarians. They are Hansi Flick (won his first seven across 2019 and 2021) and Jupp Heynckes (the first nine between 2011 and 2012).

Bayern have faced Celtic five times before in Europe and are yet to be beaten. The Reds have only faced Spartak Moscow (eight) and Benfica (seven) more often in the competition without ever tasting defeat. Should that run continue on Wednesday, Bayern will be through to the last 16 of the Champions League for the 21st time, which is a feat only Real Madrid can otherwise match. They could be among the last 16 for a 22nd year if they progress against Manchester City, though.

Kimmich the provider

Kimmich set up Harry Kane’s goal to make it 2-0 in Glasgow for his fourth assist of this Champions League campaign, equalling his personal best in the competition from 2019/20 and 2020/21. In total the midfielder has 22 assists in the Champions League, which is as many as Toni Kroos in his career. The only German players with more in the competition are Thomas Müller (25) and Mesut Özil (23). Our No.6 also leads the 2024/25 Champions League for touches (998), passes (831) and passes into the final third (129).
