FC Bayern and Vincent Kompany – a true success story! The Belgian has been the head coach of the German record champions since summer 2024 and has guided the team back onto the path to success with empathy, purpose and an attractive style of play. Bayern have now extended Kompany’s contract until summer 2029, sending out an important sign for continuity.
Hainer and Dreesen praise Kompany
Kompany has brought a breath of fresh air and impetus to Munich. The former world-class defender hasn’t just impressed with his outstanding technical knowledge, but in particular with his ability to form his teams into real units.

“He’s doing an incredibly good job,” said FCB president Herbert Hainer. “We’re playing very attractive football, scoring lots of goals. The team is having fun, you see that on the pitch – but after the games as well. There’s an incredible sense of togetherness. That comes from the coach, who does that brilliantly – both from a sporting and personal point of view.” CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also praised the head coach: “I think he’s made this group into not only a team, but a team with fun. We have a special spirit in the team. That’s a joy to see and it spreads to the whole club.”
Kompany a ‘lucky find for FC Bayern’
Board member for sport Max Eberl has described Kompany many times as a “lucky find for FC Bayern”. He said the Belgian has “made fantastic progress with the team and the team. Success doesn’t come automatically, it’s hard work. He started that last season and is continuing it seamlessly. He’s played a very big part in our success. The togetherness, this energy, this desire to win – the coach has instilled that in the players. It’s looking very good. We want to keep riding this wave,” continued Eberl.
On the pitch, Kompany’s Bayern are characterised by a modern playing philosophy with extremely intense pressing, quick transitions and a clear possession structure. Under Kompany’s guidance, the German record champions excite with a highly attractive style of play – 194 goals in 67 competitive games (2.89 per game on average) speaks for itself.
Kompany’s leadership style: Empathy and determination
What’s particularly impressive is how Kompany has formed the side into a unit. With open communication, great respect for everyone and a clear allocation of roles, the tactician has created a special atmosphere. “The communication with the players is excellent,” said midfielder Leon Goretzka. “He gets everyone on board, even those who aren’t always playing. He just gives us a special appreciation.”

With his experience as a former world-class player, Kompany knows how best to encourage young talents while motivating experienced pros, so that in the end every individual can fulfil his potential. “From day one he’s formed the team into a unit,” commented former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “He has a good relationship with every individual player and the result is that the team is functioning brilliantly.” Jupp Heynckes, the treble-winning coach of 2013, added: “He doesn’t take himself too seriously, analyses soberly and comes across as likeable.”
Record start to new season
Following a successful first year with the Bundesliga title and the Supercup success, Kompany and his team have also made a flying start to the current campaign. The Bavarians have won all of their 11 competitive matches so far, equalling the record start in German professional football. In the Bundesliga, the defending champions already have 21 points on the board after seven matchdays and a goal difference of +32, which represents the best record at this stage in the history of the league. Kompany’s side are also top of the Champions League table after two rounds of matches.
With Kompany’s contract extension, fans of FC Bayern can not only look forward to continuing to have an authentic and likeable person in charge of their favourite team, but also many more unforgettable moments – and hopefully lots of successes together!
